There is no real alternative to Office 2007 to open DOCX. You have to go though some ridiculous conversion process to get a docx file to open in Openoffice and 90% it breaks all advanced formatting.
Personally I think you are better off just trying to troubleshoot the Office 2007 install because nothing really comes close to how feature rich and intuitive Office as become since 2007 was released. Jam it back in, in the dark.
