Get the latest drivers for your hardware, especially for your video card, motherboard, and sound card. Make sure to install your drivers for your motherboard to avoid your system running like shit. You could have top-end hardware but it might run like it was bought in 1995.
A BIOS upgrade is optional unless the manufacturers have fixed something or increased support for some hardware you use. Check the changelog.
I've upgraded the firmware for an LG burner once and it went OK, but it didn't change anything for me. I wouldn't recommend doing so if it doesn't fix anything. It was hard to do, as well.
