Update driver and firmeware after new installation of the OS
 

I'm gona get a new computer soon. So after installation of the OS which drives and firmerwares should I update right away? I know that I should get a new BIOS, videocard driver, firmeware for the CD/DVD drive but is there something else?

You shouldn't need a new firmware for the optical drives...
How are you getting this computer, anyway? Is it something you're building, or is it something from a PC manufacturer?

All optical drives have a firmware on them when you get them from wherever you bought them, so unless they stop functioning properly, updating their firmware is not really necessary. (In my experience, updating an optical drive's firmware when it works fine has caused nothing but trouble.)

The only firmware you might think about upgrading is your motherboard's firmware/BIOS, but, again, you only need to do that if something doe not function correctly.

You shouldn't need a dual core driver or hot fix since the OS will have its own kernel drivers for handling that. (In other words, the OS will take care of that for you. You might need to have your motherboard's drivers installed for... better performance, but it will, more than likely, work without them.)

Get the latest drivers for your hardware, especially for your video card, motherboard, and sound card. Make sure to install your drivers for your motherboard to avoid your system running like shit. You could have top-end hardware but it might run like it was bought in 1995.

A BIOS upgrade is optional unless the manufacturers have fixed something or increased support for some hardware you use. Check the changelog.

I've upgraded the firmware for an LG burner once and it went OK, but it didn't change anything for me. I wouldn't recommend doing so if it doesn't fix anything. It was hard to do, as well.
