The next racing game to impress me that much graphically was GRID, the first time the door got ripped off my car and in the replay you could see the driver's feet working the pedals. That's quite some attention to detail.
I noticed that too, I love that kind of attention to detail.

I think the most recent 'wow' moment I had was when I finished my tank in LittleBigPlanet. I'd had a thought in my head about how it could work, and with a blank canvas and a little bit of effort there it was, a working thing. A marvelous feeling, and seeing it in action for the first time was a real 'wow' moment.

Jam it back in, in the dark.
