Personally, I have yet to be disappointed by anime I've picked up because I saw it hyped on 4chan. If it hadn't been for /a/, I probably wouldn't have picked up Ouran. Or Akagi, for that matter.
In a way, I'm kind of glad I waited for 4chan to convince me to watch Akagi instead of getting into it when it first came out. That let me marathon through each game without having to stop (except for the current arc).
Akagi is another in a string of anime that are good, even though they have no right to be. Seriously, what's interesting about an anime about playing Mahjong? Or, for that matter, playing Go? Or making bread? On the other hand, watching games of skill and/or chance on television is popular, as Akagi, the above-referenced Hikaru no Go and the World Series of Poker all indicate.
Jam it back in, in the dark.
