Akagi

It's not only mahjong either, there's some stuf inbetween matches of Akagi kicking people's asses, random Yakuza yelling at eachother, and just generally Akagi being a badass. The story and mood are pretty dark which isn't what you'd expect from an anime about mahjong, but it works surprisngly well and blends in with Akagi perfectly. Even if you don't like mahjong, I highly reccomend this anime at least a try. It's definately not for everyone, but for the people it is for, it's really great. In a way, I'm kind of glad I waited for 4chan to convince me to watch Akagi instead of getting into it when it first came out. That let me marathon through each game without having to stop (except for the current arc). Akagi is another in a string of anime that are good, even though they have no right to be. Seriously, what's interesting about an anime about playing Mahjong? Or, for that matter, playing Go? Or making bread? On the other hand, watching games of skill and/or chance on television is popular, as Akagi, the above-referenced Hikaru no Go and the World Series of Poker all indicate. |
