It doesn't surprise me that you could copyright the stuff you make in a game. If you design something of a unique nature, you should be able to copyright the intellectual rights to it. Of course, this doesn't mean that everybody will use it.
As for the woman who wants to start her own currency, ultimately it will only impact her and those who wish to transact with her. When playing a game of Monopoly, monopoly money becomes the universal game currency. It is used to record the exchange of power and to measure the strongest to weakest competitors of the game. The fact of the matter is the impact outside of the actual game will only immediately affect the participants of the game, and the only ripple effect on the global economy is money is circulated in such a small amount that it will have no impact on the value of universal currency.
