Will internet finally take our real life?

Ok, just yesterday I read some interesting stuff in Business Week about a MMORPG called "Second Life" the most notable notion is, the user in this game actually copyrighted the stuff they made in game and they could actually make money from that!

Well what do you say about this phenomenon? I mean, the existence of this game actually blurs up the line between life and virtual reality.

more info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SecondLife

A Chinese teacher living in german also wants to make her own currency, a counterpart from the linden dollars. I think this game could represent how we, modern humans are so attached to internet and cyberspace.

Can you download dinner? Maybe press a button on the side of the tower to get a glass of water? If so, congratulations, the internet has taken your real life, as you so put it. If not, and I have a feeling thar a few people can't, then you're stuck in the boat of having to get up to sustain yourself. Sucks, doesn't it?

Fluffykitten McGrundlepuss May 12, 2006 07:18 AM

People have been making money selling Everquest items and characters for years, this is hardly news.

I think it's just proof that geeks have nothing better to spend their money on.

Visavi May 12, 2006 12:13 PM

They do similar things on some sites like Habbo. Frankly, until I can pull a Mustang out of my printer or an expresso out of my USB port, then I don't think that this idea will take over our lives...at least not for a LONG while. After all, it's just virtual.

Never seen The Jetsons, have ya Skate? :( It's in the very near future! The year 2000, to be precise!

The internet's been taking lives since forever. Just look at GFF.

Eleo May 12, 2006 12:37 PM

Why do people always use GFF as an example

Too bad Second Life is a retarded piece of shit and only asians play it.

They'll have to try harder. Like, incorperate that into World of Warcraft. Then maybe you have a point.

Should I go on?

It doesn't surprise me that you could copyright the stuff you make in a game. If you design something of a unique nature, you should be able to copyright the intellectual rights to it. Of course, this doesn't mean that everybody will use it.

As for the woman who wants to start her own currency, ultimately it will only impact her and those who wish to transact with her. When playing a game of Monopoly, monopoly money becomes the universal game currency. It is used to record the exchange of power and to measure the strongest to weakest competitors of the game. The fact of the matter is the impact outside of the actual game will only immediately affect the participants of the game, and the only ripple effect on the global economy is money is circulated in such a small amount that it will have no impact on the value of universal currency.

Let's ask question "how many times you check GFF per day? 10? 20?"

Summonmaster May 12, 2006 04:56 PM

GFF is an obvious example. I used to be able to go on the computer every 3 or so days, but recently, there hasn't been a day where I haven't turned it on. Check GFF for messages, check my mail, see who's online, check if there are new anime releases, check if there are new anime songs released, etc. That's the bulk of my daily routine. I don't even watch TV anymore because the net usually holds something more fun to read or watch!

So the internet really has stolen my life, but I still go out of the house whenever possible: to keep searching for a job, meet friends, enjoy the day, etc. Internet can't steal my gummy bears either!

Yes, but I do not have a job, a social life, friends, sex partners, chores, a hitlist, or school. I have nothing to do BUT browse the internet.

When I actually had real things to do in life, I did them, and maxed out at like 3-5 posts per day on GFF.

Blades Of Ice May 13, 2006 07:02 AM

I've read several articles on "gold" farming in China, where rich guys basically hire out cheap labour for people to collect items on games such as World of Warcraft.

Second life is a good way of putting internet in general. It is an escape, and we all realize this.

Thanatos May 13, 2006 07:54 AM

It won't, although it'll start eating a large chunk of it.

I don't see myself dating on9 though. Just don't.

So like... What more proof do you require?

Fatt May 13, 2006 01:27 PM

I'm sorry Eleo, but since I come here maybe once every other week, everybody beat me to the punch.

Matt May 13, 2006 10:05 PM

Yeah but like I said, my life isn't always like this. It isn't that the internet has taken over my life, it's that I have nothing in life to do but use the internet, fap, watch reruns of that 70s show, and play PS2. If I had a job again or went to school, I wouldn't waste so much time on the net. I definitely do not consider it a second life or anytihng like that.

Danrod May 14, 2006 01:11 AM

THe internet cant take our real life cause nothing on the internet is constant, games get old and popularity dies, servers go down, accounts deleted forever. Then back to depressing reality, Much like it was when GF went down a few months ago :P

eriol33 May 14, 2006 01:25 AM

it's natural people are thirsty for informations, Internet become the oasis since worlds changes in every second.

Quoted for truth.

Internet can take the "real life" of as many people as it wants to, because it will eliminate a god awful amount of stupid people from the world. Therefore, I invite as many of you fuckers as possible to play this new amazing "real life" MMO game so you can GTFO of society.

do it for tiny tim

Eleo May 14, 2006 01:50 PM

For some reason I don't imagine the internet eliminates morons from the real world. If anything, it helps create them.
