Well regardless of what I think of the scores with relation to each other, I'd still say that even the weakest LOTR scores is alot better than most other scores.
I guess when I mean that I find the scores to the last two movies less interesting than the first, I refer to the fact that there just aren't that many new themes in the last two films in comparison to the first (for obvious reasons). That being said, The Two Towers ranks higher for me than The Return of the King because I really liked the Rohan theme, which is arguably the big theme of the second film, and I liked that it was used often and to great effect in the film. While I like the new themes and the additional emphasis on the Gondor theme in the third film, I think the massive amount of story and plot that had to be told in the span of this movie just kind of resulted in themes being given short-thrift and underused.
Of course, I am reserving my final opinions to the day I finish listening to the complete soundtrack to The Return of the King. It's amazing how much more I came to appreciate the score to The Fellowship of the Rings when I listened to it (more or less) in its entirety. I am sure that my view of the scores to the remaining two films will likewise be enriched once the new soundtracks come out.
This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.
