Aw man, how did I miss this thread? My MGO name is CORNERED_FOX. I'm usually on Friday-Mon nights. I'll try to join the next event. Keyboard and headset are go.

Should be able to, that qualifies as broadband. The minimum connection speed setting on MGO is 92 kbps, but I wouldn't recommend something that slow.

I have a Sony headset that I got for $15 at Fye (even though they still go for $30 most other places). It's pretty good. I would recommend either a Sony or Logitech one if you can find good deals on them. I would highly recommend against buying any other 3rd party headsets as most of them are crap, particularly this unknown brand I had called Game-talk or Talk-net. Those only work with SOCOM 1, I bought them for SOCOM 2 because they were cheap but they don't work. If you have an Fye near you I would check there to see if they have the Sony one for a low price, otherwise either invest the money in a Sony or Logitech one or don't get one at all. Nobody seems to use the headset on MGO, and since that's the only game I'm playing right now online the headset is pretty worthless. Unless you play SOCOM and perhaps a few other online titles it might not be worth the money. Actually I don't know if the headset works for PC also (which would add value to the purchase), but since it was designed for PS2 I'm guessing that it doesn't.
What is worth using is a USB keyboard. Custom F-key communications are good to have. Particularly "Take the hi-ground" or "Attack the lower levels" are good for virtually any map and acts as a simple tool to concentrate team firepower to certain locations without having to say much at all. Edit: Also, for playing online with pirated copies: I don't know if they work or not, but Sony's DNAS authentication system might be a problem. Sony's DNAS authentication system basically makes sure that your online setup is Sony approved. I had a bitch of a time getting online with MGO with a non-Sony wireless network doo-hickey, the Online Setup Disc would connect online, but the DNAS wouldn't authenticate when I tried to play MGO. The solution was simply not to use the wireless device and connect directly to my router with a 50 ft Cat-5 ethernet cable. Long story short: If you use a pirated copy, Sony may have methods to detect if your copy is genuine through DNAS and it won't authenticate when you try. Then again, they might not filter individual discs with DNAS and only your network setup. It's worth a shot. Most amazing jew boots ![]() [ MOBIUS ]

Do you have a pirated copy? I was just offering a reason for any problems with pirated copies.
Some wireless thingamabobs work for PS2 (either they're supported by Sony or made for PS2 or they simply happen to work out) and some don't (the one I was using didn't work. I opened ports and removed firewalls and everything. MGO would only work without it). Anyway, I was just telling the story to illustrate that DNAS can be a bitch sometimes when working with non-authentic stuff. ANYWAY. What's everyone's favorite track to listen to in MGO? I like to listen to "the Fury" because it's quiet and kind of creepy sometimes, but "Pursuers" is definitely the most kickass. How ya doing, buddy? ![]() [ MOBIUS ] |
Yes I get echo, there's no way to fix it. The echo's not so bad though, I don't think that's why nobody uses the headset. Most people I encounter online are using one, but they never talk into it. I think it's because you have to reach all the way to the SELECT button and hold it in order to talk, which isn't a good idea in a battle. Plus most people don't have much to say as the team can support itself well enough without having to use the headset. Another thing is that you can't use it if your radio is dead (which happens easily enough: claymores and grenades knock it out immediately I think) or if you just died. If there were a "toggle on/off" feature and everyone could use it at once, I think it would be more popular. Hopefully in MGS4...
I was speaking idiomatically. ![]() [ MOBIUS ] |
Well, there's always the stealth element if you want to take the time to type a message. Just hide in a box in a less traveled area of the map and type away!
I really don't see updates or an expansion pack happening. Updates would eat up too much memory card space, and Subsistence already is a sort of expansion pack to MGS3 in itself. Maybe a patch or two, but it looks like we'll have to wait for MGS4 for more MGO. What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? ![]() [ MOBIUS ] |
Enable the Rumble Roses girls, they have the best CQC specials. It's also LOL when they CQC each other at the same time.
How ya doing, buddy? ![]() [ MOBIUS ] |
Yup, the M63 American "light" machine gun (light as in compared to a tank cannon) makes you scream when you're firing it and running forward. Despite its supposed awesome power, I can never get any kills with it. It seems terribly inaccurate and it takes a second to get up to speed.
Both RR characters use the Sunrise Suplex, but they each have their own salute taunt. Oh, and the one on blue team with the black cloths stops to look at the book, unlike Raikov. Wonder what that could mean? Nevermind, April 22. That seems like quite a ways away. I love City Under Siege. Snipers can dominate it easily, but there are ways around that... I also love Ghost Factory, Pillbox Purgatory, and Brown Town (complete with Sniper Alley). I team up with my brother alot online and we've both been struggling to come up with easier names for the buildings in the City Under Siege. So far the best we've come up with is "Single ladder building", "Double ladder building", and "Big roof building". They should have easier names, like Bob, Phil, and Jerry. Anyone have any good names for the locations? What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? ![]() [ MOBIUS ]

Damn, I wish I had maps for this game. I took a look at the Subsistence strategy guide today. It's not worth buying, but it does have several handy maps as well as location names and descriptions on them (for instance that large flat roofed "hanger" in City Under Siege is actually a "garage". The elevated area between the spawn points that usually erupts in chaos as soon as the game starts is a bank! I never knew. Makes team organization a little easier). I WANT SCANS!
I already knew all the tactics listed for the well known maps, but I didn't know a couple of things on the maps I barely play. Can anybody locate scans of the guide? Jam it back in, in the dark. ![]() [ MOBIUS ] |
Well, it's not quite as simple as holding L1 and square the whole game. There are other stratgeies used quite abundantly. If you're running at an enemy, you can stop and aim in first person to get a headshot long before you can see their name above their head and get a lock on. You could throw a grenade at them. You could snipe. You could wait around a corner with a CQC weapon for some hapless enemy and CQC them, likely ensuring a kill. You could place some strategic claymores around the map or you could use the book and wait for a perfect opertunity to use it. The weapon you use makes a big difference too. Another thing is the tranq guns. In team battles, stunning the enemy can sometimes make a huge difference. Though you yourself might not get as many kills, the team as a whole is more likely to succeed (and team wins affect your rank just as much a kills apparently). Then of coarse there's the good ol' box trick as you so mentioned. The battles are just as fun with weapons limitations, such as knife only. Try a one on one battle, that uses alot more stealth tactics than the chaos-filled 8 person battles. There are also some less often used tricks, such as falling on an enemy to know them out. This game is pretty rich in strategy if you know how to use it.
There's nowhere I can't reach. ![]() [ MOBIUS ] |
You do know that you can create your own game right? You'd be surprised how fast people join on Snake server on busy nights. You can also search for games with specific peraameters. You can sometimes get lucky and find a one-on-one battle just by scrolling through the different hosts and finding a "1/2" players joined.
City Under Seige is great for sniping, but pretty much every sniping spot has at least one weakness. Usually snipers get sniped themselves pretty quick. Lost Forrest is good for sniping, and it features some nice foliage to hide in while you do it. Brown Town has a great road for sniping (you'd know which one if you saw it, it's really long). The only problem is that if the enemy starts getting sniped alot, they can come at you from your defenseless side if they take the trouble to take the long way around. You can try to counter this with defensive claymores as well as relying on your team-mates for defense since both ends of the road are near the team spawn points. The mountain level is almost sniper's paradise since it's a big open level (albiet, vertically challenged). The level with the log cabin is also pretty good for sniping. Pretty much every level has a good sniping point except the small enclosed levels, like the Killhouses. This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. ![]() [ MOBIUS ]

I hate people that hate the shotgun. Anyone else encounter "No shotguns" in the title or comment of a game? Those that complain that the shotgun is a "noob gun" are themselves noobs. Sure it's annoying getting owned by the shotgun, but there are many easy ways around it, namely DON'T get close to people with shotguns! They are easily defeated at medium range.
So anyway, I just had a really good couple of hours. I dominated as the top player in a series of TDM and my team pretty much always won, however my rank never increased. Actually it was PIG yesterday and I lost it. When I started today I had no rank, and yet after about 2.5 hours of pure awesomeness on my part I still don't have a rank! I was also never a special character despite being the best player. WTF is this? Is there some option when creating a game to cause the players in it to not increase in rank? I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? ![]() [ MOBIUS ] |
I agree, or better yet make it random or give every player a chance to be Snake. The way it is now, it's all an individual effort to have the most points, so TKing is the norm. There's no real team effort to get Snake, it's all just a rat race to land the finishing blow. Maybe they'll change it in MGS4 so that there's more of a "team" of soldiers working together to kill Snake.

I also like TDM the most, but Capture missions get really intensely fun! It's like super chaos with 8 players!

Oh, right. I haven't been playing anything else but TDM lately. Yeah, you're right, Capture is better than CTF in other games. The 20 second timer is great, it makes for some tense situations. I can't even tell you how many times the count-down has been on "1" and the Kerotan was stolen back. Brilliant!

Well we played me vs Spatula and Stealth and then Spatula quit. Now I can't seem to connect to Spatula's hosted game (some error 4000 something) and I can't find it on the list.
How ya doing, buddy? ![]() [ MOBIUS ] |
Traps are all you can do when it's 2 on 1. How drunk were you? I was kicking a little bit of ass there for a while. Too bad Rasputin couldn't find us. But yeah, I couldn't connect to your game straight from my friends list for some reason. Some error message or something.

LOL. Thank you GTA!
I recorded last nights game just for shits and giggles. I'll upload it to Google video later, hopefully some time today if iMovie hurries itself up. It'll let you guys see the game through my eyes. Apparently I suck at memorizing where I put all my claymores, I run into them a bunch. I also thought I could roll over them for some reason and not get hurt. Damn FF! To tell the truth, I meant to select some grenades after fortifying my base, but I kept forgetting and always wound up with claymores in my inventory, so I would lay them just to get rid of them. There's nowhere I can't reach. ![]() [ MOBIUS ] |
I have a Mini DV cam ($300 Canon ZR80) that I can capture direct video with by hooking it up to the av outputs on the VCR that my PS2 inputs go into. It's not really that hard, but I only have about 40 minutes on the tape that I use (I have footage that I don't want to record over) and raw video data eats up so much HD space it's insane. I'm almost out of space on my HD right now. I'm actually searching for things to delete as iMovie compresses the MGO video and saves it to the drive. It's a race!

Really? Sniping from where? I'm not a huge fan of the lab because all the games I've played in it have been bad for me.
Well, here's the video I did of the last game that took place. I took the music from my collection of Metal Gear music. It's 32 minutes long, I was too lazy to edit it cleverly. Enjoy: MGO Brown Town GFF TDM Google lowered the quality. The one I submitted is 236 mb quicktime. If anyone wants it I can upload it to Rapidshare or something. I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? ![]() [ MOBIUS ] |
I explained how I recorded the game earlier. Basically I just record the game with my mini DV cam by using the video outputs on my VCR. I only have about 40 minutes off DV tape that I can use to record the game, so I'll only be able to get a part of one round (unless you turn the #tickets down a bit). I might spectate one game and record a few minutes of somebody else playing.
Yeah, I realized I'm not such a fan of the indoor maps. We've gotta play CUS, Ghost Factory, and Brown Town on Saturday's game! And maybe Pillbox Purgatory. Those are my favorite maps. Although we have enough maps to play as it is. I just hope Rasputin's on my team ::FOX:: I see your favorite sniping spot in the Lab Spatula. I've seen people do that before, it's very hard to get at that spot. I would've stayed there with the RPG if it didn't run out of ammo. I didn't know there were multiple flamethrowers on that map. The end of the battle started lagging a bit, there were several "ghost" items. Tell me, what was the most effective way they killed you when you were sniping at our spawn area? Did stun grenades have an effect, or did you die when they rushed us en mass? How ya doing, buddy? ![]() [ MOBIUS ] |
Yeah, we did have a few games together (Rasputin right?). I was top player on High Ice a couple of times, yet I was never Sokolov. Do you know why that is? You also have very few deaths, what's your strategy?
Spatula, I can see why you like indoor maps then. You get the enemy in a narrow area right in front of you and you can take them down quickly and easily. No offense, but I find that kind of "sniping" to be a bit cheap. It's a good tactic to use, but it doesn't require quite as much skill as sniping in open areas (like in CUS for example). The only time I like to do that is in Brown Town down the long road, which I call "sniper alley". It's not quite as narrow or limited as the indoor maps, but all the enemies are in your FOV when you're lying next to the cars at either end of the alley. The only weakness is that enemies can come at you from the side, but sniping there is well worth it when the battles center around that road. I haven't done that in a while because most of my recent games in BT have centered around the red base (building I kept fortifying with claymores in the video). What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? ![]() [ MOBIUS ] |
I might be able to play at 3, but I have 4:30 church with my grandparents. I'll try to make it back ASAP. And if the Fun in the sun game isn't going on all day, I'll be on later tonight Pietak.

I've got the next hour free, where are you guys? I can't find the game in Meryl server, is it still going?
What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? ![]() [ MOBIUS ] |
Yeah, it's like Spatula disappeared off the face of earth.
I'll start a game at around 8:00 (about an hour and 20 minutes from now) in Meryl server if anybody's interested. Jam it back in, in the dark. ![]() [ MOBIUS ] |
