I think those spellings were changed in defiance of Britian during the revolution. Just like we rewrote the lyrics to God Save the Queen and turned it into a patriotic song.

Actually, it was a psychological term, so that's weird. It was used to describe someone who is slightly retarded. An idiot was someone who was severely retarded and "trainable" was somewhere in the middle, I think.
