speaking "right"
I don't know much about other languages, but one thing's for sure: in French, France is quite egocentrical. It is the only French-speaking place that doesn't recognize (i was told Africa does) title feminization, and it seems to denigrate any norm NOT from the Academy (my brother-in-law-to-be showed it).
What about other languages? Does Spain try to dominate the Spanish language? What about England? Germany? Russia? |

I think you're asking if the mother country of any language is the dominating, rule-setting language? I know that it is not so with Americans and British. I hear that the Brits in the country really hate how Americans have mutated their language. We make up words and we mutate words, we add and substract from "The Queen's English." I also know that Quebecois have mutated the French language pretty damned well. I'll be fucked if I go up there and either UNDERSTAND them or they understand ME. I remember trying to ask the simplest of questions, and no one could understand me. Their response in French was just as horrible to understand from my perspective. It goes without saying that any "colony" (I use that term loosely) or establishemnt of a nation or peoples that have a foreign mothertongue will tend to mutate the language to their needs. |
I hear that the Brits still speak the same form of English that has been around since the birth of the language, which is good, since otherwise they would have no basis for any distaste for what Americans have "done to their language".

Apparently, the word "moron" is a completely American-made word. The Brits seem to be a little bitter about it. I'm not sure why, exactly. |
English has changed plenty since it's creation. Just try reading Chaucer. In any case, Brits aren't exactly innocent. Ever heard of Cockney?

Hi there!
In Germany the spoken language, like surely anywhere else. depends on age, place and ethnic origin <--- origin... well I'll call it like that. younger pll thinking they're cool use many foreign English words. You could really say they're talking bullshit the whole day. They're very unpolite too. Young fuckers calling you small asshole and ask for a cigarette (not even 13 years) They allways say. I'm the PIMP MAN!!! P. I. M. P. pronouncing each letter very strong. They have no idea of the word's meaning [loosers] And they use many many english words. I'd say 60% english words! It's a phenomenon you only see on very stupid fuckers. Or lower class. Could be because they do not undestand english very properly. O.o These pll don.t give a shit on gramer or anything... Other ages: I'd say they talk very normal. The older ones more properly but with typical regional accent. About rule settings: It's very strange here. The German ministry of education thought it could be good for immigrants to reform our language to make it easier for them. That idea is about 6 years old. Hard to explain the changes in English. There were some words. I'd say they were crippled. Then for those words the rules were reseted or changed again. And now they're talking about changing it another time so .. uhm O.o :( :wall: yeah ... about recognition: I'd say anyone talking a bit German will be understood here And I'll think Mr. anyone will understood nativs aswell. Hmm and I wouldn.t say Germany dominates the Language. Austria and Switz are doing their own things and they're not as stupid as Germany and change their gramer. :P have a nice day |
I think Europe hating us has more to do with our views on world politics than our language, but Brits probably hate how bad we butcher English. Half of us don't even bother to learn to speak it correctly, let alone write or type it.
*oh god, please let there be no typos in this statement* :p |
Shouldn't this thread's title be "Speaking Properly"
|
In Chinese, the pronouns he and she are the same word.

as for the "coolness": french has that problem too. Should English be a disease (i do it only for the purpose of the comparison ;)), then France is terminally ill |

and bout the professors: yes they do so .. but... They pronounce them to 99% German... Those words are known as foreign words or Anglisizms or whatever ... But they're used like usual words ... WHAAHAHHAHA dunno how to explain myself ^^ uhm.. yeah.. well and many of these words have their origin in latin or thing... boing? Quote:
As for me I hate the Environment-Politic... And stupid school-looser kids telling me in any games like CS or some over Xbox - live .. I'm a Nazi... and they know only 3 german words. sieg h*** and Ausschwitz... And those are blocking things having to do with vietnam with: " Wasn't born then..... And what's with me??? If I ask them if Germany is West or North from France they guess... Often wrong.. because it's east.. Do those small fuckers think they're the best of the world? But beside of that ... Everything is okay... Oh and Mr.Bush ..... blast him away.... |
I know that France hates to let any English words sneak into their language. The French word for Bulldozer is "Bulldozere" because, you know, the "E" on the end makes all the difference.
I think English snobbery towards American use of our language stems from the fact that every change you make to it is a form of dumbing down. It's not the new phrases and terms people dislike, all languages evolve, that's natural. What people get snobby about is the way you change spelling to make them easier. It only serves to reinforce the stereotype of all Americans being stupid. Of course there are sloppy speakers over here, same as anywhere. Personally, in casual conversation my grammer is terrible and my accent fairly chavvy. I can, however, if I wish speak in perfetly eloquent English but then, I live in a frightfully middle class area, went to a frightfully middle class school and was on the public speaking team... |
I think those spellings were changed in defiance of Britian during the revolution. Just like we rewrote the lyrics to God Save the Queen and turned it into a patriotic song.
