One question: What will the genres be?
I mainly ask this as there are some games that seem to cross genres (think Diablo and clones or the Baldur's Gate games for PS2 and X-Men Legends which are RPGs crossed with action). Having quite a few genres to choose from initially would be great, and then have them whittled down eventually against each other. Plus it lets more games see the light of day through nominations. Also a nice writeup on each game that is finalized for nomination would be nice, so people who haven't played all of the games listed would be able to make an informed decision. Maybe have the write-up from whomever nominated the game. That said, I like the idea. It'd be interesting to see different people's points of view and various gaming interests defend their game. Jam it back in, in the dark. |
For the record, Guitar Hero destroys any other game in its genre...
![]() For the "RPG" section, I would definately split it up some more, simply because there are so many different styles to work with (Diablo and clones, classic Final Fantasy/Dragon Warrior, current Final Fantasy - which are more like reading a book, or Baldur's Gate/KOTOR, or even Oblivion). Picking a "top" game from all the different styles would be silly, especially off the start. There's nowhere I can't reach. |
But as far as the genre definitions, they would probably have to be defined a little more, otherwise the idea is good. This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
That's probably a bit more appropriate.
What about Strategy-RPGs (Shining Force/FF Tactics/Disgaea, etc.)? I think the terms "linear" and "non-linear" are too broad as well, and having a "Final Fantasy" term is a bit strict. How about using "Turn based (FF, Dragon Warrior)", "Limited Freedom" (Baldur's Gate/KOTOR)", and "Live Action" (Morrowind/King's Field/Deuce Ex) etc.) That would give you 5 total RPG sub-genres, which would make it more in line with your other sub-genres.
