Best <insert genre> EVER. -- Contest idea

Hello, folks! It's Mo0, your friendly neighborhood doofus, here with a contest idea! How's about this...

Each genre will get its day in the sun. First nominations will be held (in a format yet to be determined), then the games go against each other in a BSC-like single-elimination tournament. In this case, people would be voting not on a song or whatever, but simply on which game is better.

Now, especially in the RPG field, this would provide some very possible opportunities for biases to come in. So this would be my idea to prevent that... instead of, say, allowing each Final Fantasy game in the RPG category, how about a little mini-contest where ONE representative for FF is put into the category? This could be extended to basically any series that potentially could flood any field.

My original idea behind this contest was to do a whole bunch of little genre tournaments, then pit the winners of those tournaments against each other to find not only the BEST GAME EVER, but the BEST GENRE EVER. When I ran that idea by a couple of people, they said that most likely the RPG would win no matter what, so I'm not sure if that's the best idea anymore. Just putting the idea out there in case anyone wants to comment on it.

Any holes in my logic, questions you have, feel free to ask. Also, this does not have any sort of staff approval or whatever, but hopefully they'll be accomodating to my whims.

What's an RPG? Is it like this?

http://static.howstuffworks.com/gif/rpg-7-launcher.gif

Other than that, sounds good to me. First genre should be platformers, what with Mario and all.

Lord Jaroh Jun 16, 2006 12:32 AM

One question: What will the genres be?

I mainly ask this as there are some games that seem to cross genres (think Diablo and clones or the Baldur's Gate games for PS2 and X-Men Legends which are RPGs crossed with action). Having quite a few genres to choose from initially would be great, and then have them whittled down eventually against each other. Plus it lets more games see the light of day through nominations.

Also a nice writeup on each game that is finalized for nomination would be nice, so people who haven't played all of the games listed would be able to make an informed decision. Maybe have the write-up from whomever nominated the game.

That said, I like the idea. It'd be interesting to see different people's points of view and various gaming interests defend their game.

guyinrubbersuit Jun 16, 2006 01:43 AM

Yeah the defintion of genres would have to be defined. Like would Zelda fit into RPGs or Adventure? And what about subgenres like Strategy RPGs? I'm down with this. I'll defend Yoshi's Island for best platformer til I die!

Newbie1234 Jun 16, 2006 01:31 PM

I guess it could be fun, but these always boil down to popularity contests where the winners are almost always Zelda, Mario, Final Fantasy, etc.

I wouldn't mind doing our own list of "greatest games" in no specific order like Gamespot does. Ranking games is always relative depending on your own personal tastes whether it be in a specific genre or not. Also, it gets even worst when people start complaining about games being ranked too high when they either haven't played them, or don't understand that it was "state-of-the-art" at the time of release.

Jurassic Park Chocolate Raptor Jun 16, 2006 01:37 PM

Needs sub-sub-sub genres now.

Best Vertical-Scrolling Bullet Hell shmup.
Best Action-Adventure-RPG
Best Action-Sports-RPG (Mario Golf GBA lol)
Best Train Driving Simulator

Golfdish from Hell Jun 16, 2006 05:08 PM

Personally, I'd just like to see the overall nomination lists for games, straight-up (not worry about genres too much). It'd be fun just to make something like that up.

Why would I see massive flame wars being triggered over a contest like this, though...

A make or break idea I'd put forward would be for polls to not be a part of this, and voting instead be carried out SotW in-thread style, with an evaluation of each game by each voter a mandatory part of proceedings. You know your voters have actually played the games in question this way, and intelligent discussion would be a lot more rife.

value tart Jun 16, 2006 06:33 PM

That was actually one of my original ideas, also. I was thinking that instead of voting, there should be a discussion of each game and then a panel of judges would go and look through, neutrally, and see which game had the better argument presented.

That would be a lot more work-intensive, though, and finding neutral people on the Internet is like finding straight people on the Style network.

Apart from Densha de Go!!, what else is left?

Jurassic Park Chocolate Raptor Jun 16, 2006 07:20 PM

I don't know but it's clear Densha is the most superior one in it's field. I am looking forward to arguing it's case in that genre's thread!

That's not a train simulator.

Maybe you've just never been on a train like that.

(Either way, Touhou 8 wins Bullet Hell schmup right now. No argument.)

Elixir Jun 16, 2006 09:32 PM

Imperishable Night is a curtain fire shooting game out of the Touhou series. It isn't called Touhou 8. Can we just get Djinova in this thread please.

I would argue that Imperishable Night isn't the best. Ikaruga and Dodonpachi Dai-ou-jou aren't specifically made to be bullet hell shooters, but they pull it off nicely. There's also Mushihimesama and the CAVE shooters. Then, we have Shikigami no Shiro II and the other random shooters available. Not to mention the Psyvaria series. ZUN's Touhou shooters are made deliberately focused on bullet patterns, and not so much about blowing shit up in the traditional shooting fashion.

I've completed Imperishable Night (full version) and while I like it over Flower View and Shoot the Bullet, Perfect Cherry Blossom is still my favorite in the series. However Imperishable's music is probably the best.

Infernal Monkey Jun 16, 2006 09:41 PM

Guys, guys, this is the best train sim.

Here's the genres that I've got so far.

Role-playing Game
First-person Shooter
Shoot-em-up (Vertical)
Shoot-em-up (Sidescrolling)
Action
Platforming
Adventure
Action-Adventure
Puzzle (Reactionary) (a la Tetris or Lumines)
Puzzle (Cerebral) (a la Hexic or Alchemy)
Party (???)
Beat-em-up
Vs. Fighter
Rhythm/Music
Turn-Based Strategy
Real-Time Strategy
Creative (??? I was thinking things like Mario Paint and MTV Music Generator, which are essentially sold as games but require mostly creativity.)
Fantasy Sports (NBA Jam, Super Mario Strikers)
Realistic Sports (MADDEN)
Fantasy Racing (Mario Kart, etc.)
Realistic Racing (Gran Turismo 4, etc.)

Any ideas? Suggestions? Removal ideas?

Elixir Jun 16, 2006 10:50 PM

What's the difference between Action and Adventure, Action-Adventure?

Also, of course you should add rhythm/music. We even have a forum for them. Party would be.. SSBM, Mario Rehash 1-7, anything which supports more than 2 players I'm assuming. So things like Chu Chu Rocket would apply. And you totally forgot sports.

value tart Jun 16, 2006 11:02 PM

Oh, well, sports I just never think about as games. >_>

Rhythm I was worried about solely because it'll almost certainly be DDR.:/

Forgot about best Real-Time Strategy and best Turn-Based Strategy.

And... regarding the difference between Action, Adventure, and Action-Adventure... Adventure is things like Sam and Max, King's Quest, and Myst, Action adventure is games like Zelda, and... um... can someone help me out on what exactly an Action game is? Oh, shit, things like Ratchet and Clank, I guess. Max Payne.

Elixir Jun 16, 2006 11:09 PM

So if Action is Ratchet and Clank, platform is specifically 2D based? Or should there be a 2D catagory?

Also hell no, DDR is certainly not the prime rhythm game around. With Gitaroo Man, Ouendan, Pop'n Music, Daigasso, Beatmania (YES I'LL INCLUDE IT EVEN THOUGH I HATE IT'S GUTS, ALRIGHT) and others around, DDR has competition.

Jurassic Park Chocolate Raptor Jun 16, 2006 11:15 PM

I was thinking Action would be like Devil May Cry, or Onimusha. Max Payne works here too.

Also you could split sports in fantasy and realistic as well. Super Mario Strikers versus FIFA 06? I'd rather not.

Also, some stuff DEFIES genre. Katamari, for example. ANd what about AWESOME games like Prime Pinball. We don't have a PINBALL genre now.

(I DEMAND 500 GENRES AND SUB GENRES)

value tart Jun 16, 2006 11:27 PM

For the record, Skills' idea about what an Action game is is better than mine. :(

Jurassic Park Chocolate Raptor Jun 17, 2006 12:00 AM

WHERE IS MY BEST PINBALL GAME ASSHOLE.

Prime Pinball versus Kirby's Pinball Land comin' like what.

Lord Jaroh Jun 17, 2006 01:46 AM

For the record, Guitar Hero destroys any other game in its genre...
;)

For the "RPG" section, I would definately split it up some more, simply because there are so many different styles to work with (Diablo and clones, classic Final Fantasy/Dragon Warrior, current Final Fantasy - which are more like reading a book, or Baldur's Gate/KOTOR, or even Oblivion). Picking a "top" game from all the different styles would be silly, especially off the start.

Jurassic Park Chocolate Raptor Jun 17, 2006 01:59 AM

Oh, that makes sense.

RPG (Linear)
RPG (Non Linear)
RPG (Final Fantasy)
RPG (Crap games like Diablo)
