That could happen if you had the computer and/or monitor turned on when you made the connection. It could also easily happen if you didn't ground yourself (to get rid of static electricity) before making the connection.

By the way, CPU =! computer.
CPU = Central Processing Unit (synonym for "processor" in PC's).
