It is a bad idea because you're taking an already compressed source and transcoding it into another format which will result in even more quality degradation and visual artifacts; which will undoubtedly look horrible in High Definition. It is probably better to get an modded Xbox as your media centre, or build a cheap PC, and playback your movies and output to your HDTV.

Also, due to the way variable frame rates work in mkv and ogm files, it is sometimes impossible to convert them into MPEG-2.

If you must convert the media, convert it to DVD MPEG-2 because VCDs' resolution is far too small. Look on doom9 or Videohelp for tutorials on how to convert your format into MPEG-2.
