Cactoid item thing:
Also, guys, if you're discussing quests or hunts, put them in spoilers. There's nowhere I can't reach. |
Apparently you're supposed to face the final boss at around level 40-50. I'm 35 hours in and I agree that the story isn't THAT great, but that's simply because there isn't enough of it. I wish there were more events and a longer timespan. There certainly are some incredibly moving and memorable scenes, however, and the dialogue IS worth the price of admission. What Smith has done with this translation is incredible. The story feels like Vagrant Story, in both style and LENGTH (which is it's only downfall). This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
I love the battle system.
Personally, I don't look forward to going back to **RANDOM ENCOUNTER**LOAD LOAD LOAD**HIT X 20 TIMES**LOAD LOAD LOAD**WALK 3 STEPS**REPEAT I much prefer the real-time battles of FFXII along with the gambits. It takes the tedium out of the game. I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? |
I don't see how the computer doing mundane things that you would be doing ANYWAY (like attacking all the time, healing when you get below a certain HP, curing poison, etc...) is bad.
Frankly, I'm glad I don't have to do any of these things. It seems like your problem is with RPGs in general. Aside from say, the SMT series and a few others, most RPGs let you get by with mashing the X button through every battle. I was speaking idiomatically. |
Oh, on the contrary, gameplay-wise, it's not short at all.
I just wish there was more story (or at least, to go in-depth more at each location instead of quickly running from place to place). What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? |
It's more like FFXI mixed with Vagrant Story.
I've realized the only problem with the game: the dungeons. They're MMORPG-style dungeons. Meaning vast, open areas with little storyline relevance or things to "check." So, basically this is a game where the structure is: Storyline --> Dungeon --> Storyline --> Dungeon --> Storyline --> etc... The two don't really blend together. At least in other FF games, a lot of the dungeons would be closely tied with the storyline and you would learn things as you went along. This is more like the older FF (1-5) or Dragon Quest games in terms of structure. FELIPE NO |
What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? |
spoiler for about 6 hours into the game...:
Jam it back in, in the dark. |
I use mainly Vaan, Basch, and Penelo. Vaan (Swords) - I use him as a jack-of-all trades. Stealing mostly, but since I directly control him the most, I also do some buffs and debuffs through him. Basch (Swords) - tank, heavy damage dealer Penelo (Bow) - healer, constant "protect" buffer There's nowhere I can't reach. |
No story spoiler here, just a general criticism about how character storylines are proportioned:

Ugggghhhh.
I got the guide, and I love it. I like the inclusion of a shot of every piece of equipment. I love weapon design, and not since articles on Secret of Mana in old Nintendo Power magazines have I seen this kind of weapon coverage. However, I'm continuing my love/hate relationship with this game. The dungeons near the last 1/3rd of the game are HORRIBLE (as in, the ABSOLUTE WORST I HAVE EVER EXPERIENCED). They drag on and on and have no storyline, and just use the same tedious map designs repeated for like, 10 floors in a row. You feel like you're just on a treadmill for 3 hours, then the game says "enough, here's a boss" and you continue on with the game. For every aspect that I like, there's a counterpart that I dread having to experience again. Like the stupid concept of randomly assigned treasure. You might find a secret room with a treasure chest inside, only to get 1 gil instead of a cool weapon, just because the odds were 70/30. It's crap. Plus, as I've said, the storyline is just... very shallow and cliche. Frankly, it needs 10 times the character development it actually has. The characters (in concept) are great, the graphics are for the most part incredible, the music is classic Sakimoto, and the dialogue is the best in any game I've ever played, but it's dragged down by this other stuff that is just so frustrating. I was speaking idiomatically. |
Beat the game tonight.
Well, the story gets a lot better by the very end. I can't wait to download a rip of all the English cutscenes (if anyone does that, like with Xenosaga Ep 1). Ultimately, the game has a great story in the beginning and end. For the middle and definitely the final few dungeons, it's brutally tedious. It's in my top 5 Final Fantasies, for sure. Just not my favorite. What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? |
Foe: leader's target -> Attack Foe: nearest -> Attack In that order, and have everyone's gambits on. FELIPE NO |
Are all you people with Bonus DVD music segment problems watching the DVD on your PS2?
That's crazy talk. Stick that baby in a DVD player or your computer. I tried it on my standard Samsung DVD player and it was able to play that chapter. What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? |
When it comes to equipment and magic, don't buy licenses for what you don't have yet.
Aim for getting the augment squares first, stuff like HP+ and spell cost-10%. Also aim for getting all 3 quickenings for your main characters as soon as possible. Each quickening multiplies your max MP by a full bar. You really need this for everyone if you're going to be relying on healing spells. Jam it back in, in the dark. |
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/dict.asp?Word=marquis
mar·quis Pronunciation (märkwis, mär-kee) or mar·quess (märkwis) n. pl. mar·quis·es (-kwi-siz) or mar·quis (mär-keez) or mar·quess·es (-kwi-siz) 1. A nobleman ranking below a duke and above an earl or a count. 2. Used as a title for such a nobleman. Marquis = "Markwiss". British pronunciation. Since their accents are British and not French. Same thing in Drakengard 2, with the pronunciation of Lieutenant as "Luftenant". It's British, people. There's nowhere I can't reach. |
WHY-vern. Long I sound.
This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
People. You're still in the beginning 1/3 of the game. I thought this was God's gift to gaming back at that point.
Wait for the middle+near end when there's no story for long periods of time and the novelty of the battle system runs down and you're stuck in the worst, most bland dungeons ever fighting 2 or 3 enemies over and over again. But then it all gets better in the ending. That's where all the character development in the ENTIRE game occurs, and it's at least satisfying. I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? |
Bhujerba is supposed to be Middle-Eastern, as far as I can tell. I was speaking idiomatically. |
Basically, the only places that I'm certain you can't go back to are: not really a spoiler:

Like I said, try to get all your quickenings (at least, for your main 3 characters) as soon as possible, since they multiply your max mp. Make sure to equip everyone (all 6 characters) with the LP-doubling accessory ASAP to make the most out of your kills.
Also, try to get the upgrade that regenerates mp every time you deal damage or kill a monster. My main fighters never run out of mp, and my healer has so much that she can go a whole dungeon without running out. FELIPE NO |
LP Doubling Accessory: Gold Amulet
You can start buying them at... well, it's a location with the initials Mt. B.O. location name:
If you're still at the Raithwall Tomb, you still have a few dungeons to get through to get to Mt. B.O. This way, instead of needing 16,000 LP to max out a license board, you'll only need 8,000. What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? |
