Personally I loved Kana as well, but I certainly wouldn't recommend it to people who crowd TQP.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

For one thing it's not a dating sim. But then what you're asking is the same as "is there anything that sets this RPG apart from the hundred other RPGs out there" and pretty much there never is.

It was a touching story with an unusual atmosphere and very different focus from most h-games. But if you're saying you've played so many of them you know them inside out, there probably isn't anything new about it.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

Ah, I liked this one. The premise is very cliché but the characters are likable. There was an Xbox port in development with a new character design for Kana, but it was predictably cancelled. Too bad, because the story is more enjoyable without the sex scenes.
I myself felt the sex scenes fit well. They were tastefully made and there was only like two of them, so it wasn't quite like most h-games "removing their sex scenes".

As for the Xbox version, as you said, it was cancelled, but they did release a remake for the PC called "Kana.. Okaeri!" with new graphics and voice acting.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Having sex scenes at all seems counter-productive to what they're trying to do with the game, though. They'd be able to reach a much wider audience if they didn't insist on anything explicit, and indeed the sex scenes almost sound gratuitous if that's not the focus of the story. So why bother at all? It just winds up relegating the thing to the same unsavory bin as any other hentai game.
Well the characters fall in love and have sex (or make love, whichever way you want to put it). It's not a story meant for kids, and not just because it has sex scenes. By your logic, all movies should aim for the PG-13 rating or lower because someone dying, swearing or bleeding is gratuitous.

They did insist on explicit (if you really need to put it that way), it's an adult story probably because of those sex scenes, but then that's what differentiates it.

You have a lot of people saying the really good h-games have such good stories the sex scenes can be removed from the console versions as they are so out of place. I'm just saying the sex scene(s) weren't out of place or tacked on at all here, it was where the characters' relationships came to a point. It sounds to me like Soldier's reasoning for editing out the sex scenes from the Evangelion doujin for RE-Take (though he did do it for his little sister), while I felt they were a bigger part of the whole (and the strange atmosphere).

Since this thread is based on a translated japanese dating sim, I guess this is the best place to ask:

Does anyone (not here, but ANYWHERE) translate japanese visual novels or dating simulators? The ones by Kid look interesting, and there's a fair few which get quite a high score ranking on this famitsu-like website which reviews them critically, so I was just wondering.

It'd be great if there were some patches for PS2 games like this, or PC ones. I know there's a few PC ones but some of the PS2 games just won't see it into PCs.
I doubt they're mass-translating them in the way you're hoping, but they've done a few. Mirror Moon translated Tsukihime and Melty Blood, and is currently working on Kagetsu Tohya if I understood correctly. From other Type-Moon works, they recently finished translating Fate/Stay Night (or at least some of the arcs).

NNL translated Wind -a breath of heart- (which was pretty generic) and I recall a few groups working on a number of titles, so there are translators for them, but they're usually stuck in forever WIP or forgotten.

I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body?

Is there a scene where you've blown a massive load on your sister's face? If so, I kinda feel like that would destroy any artistic value the game held.
Oh, I guess if you're only fucking your girlfriend and your sister you're a pretty classy guy.

That is if we're defining classy as a candidate for the Jerry Springer show.
So you're a classy guy for taking weak potshots at a game you've never played?

Now now RR. Not all of them need to be held in so much contempt (or feared, it seems). They're not great literature, but give 'em a break since they're not all about tentacles and kitchen utensils, even if you seem to want them to be.

I was speaking idiomatically.

Maybe it's the European in me talking here, but I still don't see how it's doing a disservice. Sure, you can remove the sex scenes and the story will be there, just as you can remove, say, the references to drugs in Trainspotting or any talk of sex in Y Tu Mama Tambien. But why? Why has the age rating thing conditioned people to think that anything raising the rating is something excessive and gratuitous. The sex scenes don't detract from anything since they're a part of the whole. You follow the storyline, you care about the characters, they fall in love, they have sex, and you're happy for them. They could fade to black, but showing the characters making love makes a much more effective statement about just how the two feel about each other.

It's not a game that would be played by regular gamers anyway. It IS an h-game, it makes no attempt to hide this, it simply is more gentle and honest than what's generally in games of this type (dating simulators as people assumed earlier). The audience is obviously completely different (at least that's what everyone's trying say, apparently).

I'm reminded of Fahrenheit's notorious sex scenes that were cut out from the US version, even though they showed more of the characters' relationships than could be shown without them (though Lucas' and Carla's scene felt far more out of place than the rest of the scenes, or the ones in Kana).

I just don't see how anyone mature enough wouldn't be able to enjoy something like that when it's well told enough. But again, maybe it's just me since I haven't grown up in an American environment.

What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now?

In other words, people are condemning the game because of it. That's what Monkey King means by doing the game a disservice. (I think?)
I can understand that kind of concern, though it doesn't really detract from the whole so much as bring out uncalled prejudice. And that's not really something that's the game's fault or the development team's.
