Kana Little Sister.
Hi, I don't post here very often or make many threads, at all. But I just wanted to spread the word about this very inspiring game I recently played. The Quiet Place seemed like the best spot to post it, since most people here are going through some rough times in some way or another. It's called Kana Little Sister, and its a bishoujo game about Life, Love and Death. Yes it involves some explicit sex scenes like most games of its type, and not recommended for anyone under 18. But in all honesty, this is much more than just your typical hentai text based RPG, in fact the sex scenes only take up about 10% of the game. So why recommend it you may ask? Well, in my opinion it has one of the best stories I've read in any game, period. Because it's an adult game it doesn't moderate itself like some type of fairytale, you'd think someone wrote it based off of real life experiences. But to get to the point on whats the basis behind the game, here are a few details, links with more information and a direct download to the game.
You play as a Taka Todo, a young man with a sister [Kana] suffering from a terminal illness [for anyone against incest, she's adopted]. The game starts out with you visiting her in the hospital which she basically lives at, and flashes back to your early childhood when your relationship started. At first, Taka hated Kana for stealing attention from his parents, but after a certain experiance, Taka realizes she's his only sister he'll ever have and must protect her. The game progresses from early childhood, early teens, on to adult hood. As she gets older, Kana's condition gets worse and you're her only one true friend in the world, so she develops very deep feelings for you. Your parents treat her like a burden and barely visit her, they're workaholics. The two of you grow extremely close but later on in the game you find out some very shocking news. I'm not going to spoil it for you but your sister will need your help now more than anything. I hope my description was intriguing enough, if not you don't have to take my word for it. Some of you probably already know about this game anyway. I know it seems like it COULD go in TQP, but gaming threads should be kept in the gaming forums.

She's actually your long-list little brother, isn't she?
|
Wait, you're recommending people in The Quiet Place play a japanese PC dating simulator?
|
Oh, her? Yeah, I know her. It's going to take a while. It happened years ago
Did you know there are three kinds of little sisters? Those that seek love, those that live for pride, and those that can read emotion. Those are the three. And her? She was a girl they called "Kana: Little Sister." This man was her brother. He is the man I seek. It was a cold and snowy day. The Incestuous Relationship is shrouded in mystery. Everyone is a rapist, and a loli. And no one knows who is a victim, and who is the aggressor. And what is love? |

There are literally thousands of visual novels in japan, from PC to PS2, from Tokimeki Memorial to True Love Story 3, the only difference about this one is that it's translated. I'm sure there's other "visual novels" in japan that are interesting too, just not translated into english.
Unless wiki is wrong, it's a japanese dating simulator. |
Personally I loved Kana as well, but I certainly wouldn't recommend it to people who crowd TQP.

The first time I played Kana... I reached one of the 'Intellectual Endings' ( Ending 4, 'Snow' ) The game itself was quite 'entertaining' and I liked that ending ;) It made me think "ha.. I guess, I did everything right!" Well... Some people said, Kana would be sad...or...something like that.. In my case.. Kana kept me cool..more like cold inside... too bad, eh? Planetarian.. on the other hand... was so... so sad.. I cried throughout the whole game.. except for the so-called 'sad-ending'... |
Like Lix said, is there anything that sets this apart from the other hundreds of dating sims out there? It all sounds fairly generic to me.

For one thing it's not a dating sim. But then what you're asking is the same as "is there anything that sets this RPG apart from the hundred other RPGs out there" and pretty much there never is.
It was a touching story with an unusual atmosphere and very different focus from most h-games. But if you're saying you've played so many of them you know them inside out, there probably isn't anything new about it. |

2) Gay rape (turns out IT'S A TRAP). 3) Anal rape. 4) Group rape. 5) Scat rape 6) She bites your dick off and kills you (guro). |
Too bad you wont find any of that in this game, except #1 if you want to put it that way.
|
Ah, I liked this one. The premise is very cliché but the characters are likable. There was an Xbox port in development with a new character design for Kana, but it was predictably cancelled. Too bad, because the story is more enjoyable without the sex scenes.

Obviously Hakeem must work on his appearance!

As for the Xbox version, as you said, it was cancelled, but they did release a remake for the PC called "Kana.. Okaeri!" with new graphics and voice acting. |
Having sex scenes at all seems counter-productive to what they're trying to do with the game, though. They'd be able to reach a much wider audience if they didn't insist on anything explicit, and indeed the sex scenes almost sound gratuitous if that's not the focus of the story. So why bother at all? It just winds up relegating the thing to the same unsavory bin as any other hentai game.

Since this thread is based on a translated japanese dating sim, I guess this is the best place to ask:
Does anyone (not here, but ANYWHERE) translate japanese visual novels or dating simulators? The ones by Kid look interesting, and there's a fair few which get quite a high score ranking on this famitsu-like website which reviews them critically, so I was just wondering. It'd be great if there were some patches for PS2 games like this, or PC ones. I know there's a few PC ones but some of the PS2 games just won't see it into PCs. |

They did insist on explicit (if you really need to put it that way), it's an adult story probably because of those sex scenes, but then that's what differentiates it. You have a lot of people saying the really good h-games have such good stories the sex scenes can be removed from the console versions as they are so out of place. I'm just saying the sex scene(s) weren't out of place or tacked on at all here, it was where the characters' relationships came to a point. It sounds to me like Soldier's reasoning for editing out the sex scenes from the Evangelion doujin for RE-Take (though he did do it for his little sister), while I felt they were a bigger part of the whole (and the strange atmosphere). NNL translated Wind -a breath of heart- (which was pretty generic) and I recall a few groups working on a number of titles, so there are translators for them, but they're usually stuck in forever WIP or forgotten. |
