People in New Zealand

We're scheduled to fly to New Zealand in four months. Is there important things I should know before? Such as a place to avoid?

I'm more of a suburb kind of guy (living in east auckland right now) and surburbs are pretty mellow. It's really multi-cultural over here, too. The suburbs aren't really what I'd call a tourist attraction though. :3
