Question Let's Cast Magic Missile!

Signup and discussion

I handle most of the rules considerations. If you try to do something illegal, I'll usually just drop you a note in this thread and give you the opportunity to edit your actions.

5 players at a time maximum. As characters die or players drop out, the next one in the queue slots in.

At the absolute minimum, you pick a race and a class. That's all the character design work you absolutely need to do.

If you'd prefer to actually assemble the character yourself instead of relying on my good graces, use the official Character Builder: (Ongoing Free Trial). It will walk you through the process and is extremely painless compared to assembling the character manually. While it's not hard to find a cracked version if you know where to look, just ask me and I'll probably share my account with you.

RACES

Bladeling, Bugbear, Bullywug, Changeling, Deva, Dragonborn

Drow, Duergar, Dwarf, Eladrin, Elf, Genasi

Githyanki, Githzerai, Gnoll, Gnome, Goblin, Goliath

Half-Elf, Half-Orc, Halfling, Human, Hobgoblin, Kalashtar

Kenku, Kobold, Longtooth Shifter, Minotaur, Orc, Razorclaw Shifter

Revenant, Shadar-Kai, Tiefling, Warforged, Wilden

CLASSES

Ardent, Artificer, Assassin, Avenger, Barbarian, Bard

Cleric, Druid, Fighter, Invoker, Monk, Paladin

Psion, Ranger, Rogue, Seeker, Shaman, Sorcerer

Swordmage, Warden, Warlock, Warlord, Wizard

Hybrid Classes

Mix the class features of two classes together in a horrifying stew of possible incompetence. Create a classic Fighter/Thief or any other class combination! Add a multiclass feat to your Hybrid to dip into three classes at once, if you're an insane person.

The Ardent, Artificer, Assassin, Monk, Psion, and Seeker defy hybridization at this time.

This concept of Superfly Johnson intrigues me. Tell me more.
Get the Flash Player to play this audio file:
(Yeah, 1st level. How soon I need it largely depends on how long it takes to find enough people — which is to say you probably have plenty of time.)

How ya doing, buddy?

Well, when I say "fairy" this is less Tinkerbell and more Titania & Oberon, so no wings. Limited teleport, though, so there is still flitting.

Well, the problem with being "tongue-in-cheek" per se is that not everybody is good at that and I think I would rather avoid having the whole thing devolve into Monty Python quotes. But I don't think being grim and frostbitten about the whole thing is going to be any fun either so as long as we can avoid turning into Rocky Horror: Orc Dorks Edition, go nuts

How ya doing, buddy?

Well, that's 5 people who at least picked a class. There's no cleric, though, so deaths are imminent and the rest of you will certainly get your chance.

Two fighters, a warlord, a rogue, and a wizard, that fills each major niche. We'll start once I've got my paperwork in order, probably Monday/Tuesday.

Well, it's nothing you'll have to worry about on your end; you guys will just get little reference cards with your individual skills/combat powers/spells etc.

I'll be your fucking white mage cliche if you'll bump the party up to 6. >:(
Yes, but bumping up the party limit would already reduce lethality, and then adding a healer to it? Nobody would ever get murderized! What's the fun in that.

What, you don't want my bikini-clad body?

I do not see how you could possibly have a class that is more punching-focused than a Fighter

Since there are no Monks or Barbarians anymore

Fie, they're missing the Ogre Jelly and the Crashing Boar.

Also, what do Warlords do, exactly?
Tactical support, coherent planning, inspirational leadership, that sort of thing

(they throw bonuses around and expedite flanking mostly)

There's nowhere I can't reach.

Ok so ASIDE FROM ALL THAT

Unfortunately I wasn't quite able to eliminate character sheets entirely. I tried my best but some classes just have way too many things going on to cram onto reference cards. I did manage to find character sheets which are only a single page, so between that and the cards you should have pretty much everything you need at a glance.

Brady: Argumentus of Hamfist (Sheet + 5 power cards)

knkwzrd: Motsognir the Subgenius (Sheet + 5 power cards)

Shin: Scary Bob (Sheet + 13 power cards)

Zephyrin: Fescue Totengeld (Sheet + 5 power cards)

Denicalis: Gabriel Sledgegammer (Sheet + 9 power cards)

(Deni, I put an extra point in your DEX; your points only added up to 21-point buy)

Take some time to look over these and get a vague handle on your abilities before we begin.

These sheets should be openable/editable in standard Adobe Reader; in the event anyone doesn't have a PDF reader I can provide the sheets in PNG.

Most of you have played at least once it seems but if you have any questions I'll gladly explain whatever.

I was speaking idiomatically.

All looks good to me. I assume an "E" type spell is a once per encounter affair?
Yeah, "E" for once-per-encounter, "D" for once-a-day, "AW" for at-will (unlimited)

All right, we begin! Please keep rules questions and other OOC confined to this thread rather than the game thread, for the sake of neatness.

RULES OOPDAT:

Deni PMed me about this so I figured it was worth clarifying to everybody:

In a combat turn you get:

1 standard action, 1 move action, and 1 minor action.

OR 2 move actions and a minor action

OR A standard action and 2 minor actions

OR 3 minor actions

OR a move action and 2 minor actions.

And as many free actions as you want.

Drawing/sheathing a weapon or pulling something out of your pack is a minor action (in Zeph's case it's a free action because he has Quick Draw)

Attacking is a standard action, as are most of your powers (check your cards to be sure)

And move actions are pretty obvious, just be careful not to move further than your Speed. Shifting is ALSO a move action; this moves you one square away from the enemy so you can get out of reach without provoking attacks of opportunity.

As a matter of interest, what is exactly is in a standard adventurer pack??
A backpack, a bedroll, flint and steel, a belt pouch, two sunrods*, ten days’ worth of trail rations, 50 feet of hempen rope, and a waterskin.

*magical flashlight with 4-hour batteries

There's nowhere I can't reach.

Nope.

Waterskins hold about 1/2 gallon of water, about a day's worth.

Quick draw lets you DRAW a weapon as a free action, but putting a weapon away is still a minor action. So switching mid-battle would be a minor action unless you just drop whatever you're already holding (picking it back up would be a minor)

The fun thing is that Argumentus' Intelligence score isn't actually any lower than Gabriel's. His slow speech and bumbling maneuvers may hide a sinister cunning.

Pretty much all the fansites are worthless; they got their information from pre-release data and haven't updated it since the books came out. And the official sites won't tell you anything because they want you to buy the books instead.

I'll upload the Player's Handbook to Saxypunch; it didn't really occur to me that people would want to wrestle with the damned thing.

Oh, sure, once you get the game going it's very smooth, but the Player's Handbook could easily have spent another week or two in editing; there's an ugly pattern of telling you "do X" and to do X you need information they haven't given you yet.

edit: added the PHB to thread OP

What're you getting at, exactly? Everybody already went up the stairs and read the sign earlier, minus the part none of you can read. Unless I'm misunderstanding you?

I did, but it was only a vehicle to deliver weak jokes mostly.
