Mundane gear, kit, whatever. Technically speaking the guidelines say you can have as much mundane equipment as you want for free if you're starting above level 1, and that's fine by me. Have 20 bottles of wine, have 1000 feet of rope, go crazy.

As the gunpowder weapons aren't available in the Builder, what would otherwise be a very hilarious loophole in the reloading mechanic is avoided. And of course I reserve the right to stomp anyone who obviously intends to go on a reselling spree to artificially inflate their starting gold —

Zerg, we already have a method in place for people who try to violate the laws of physics.

It's called "roll acrobatics".

And yeah I doubt I would let people just abruptly drop like a stone Looney Tunes style

In other news Maris hasn't even been on the board in days let alone answered my PM so if I haven't had a response by the Kraken's next turn I'll just roll Deni's initiative right then and there.

I should also mention, relevant to Deni's character, that I'm waiving the special weapon rules for small PCs in future. So if someone wants to make a halfling or gnome with a two-hander go nuts.

Or a corgi, corgis are also small. Never Forget About Corgis

There's nowhere I can't reach.

Wvlf, I would rule that your anti-slippery boots are adequate to counteract the slipperiness of the Kraken's hide.

The kraken can't really do much to you while you're on top of it that it can't do anyway, so there's no special risk there. And it's awesome so take a +2 circumstance bonus to hit why not.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Deni, feel free to write yourself into the scene as you like. Your quick reference sheet is here:

Samwise Shadowspade | D&D 4E | Obsidian Portal

To view your powers, scroll down, click on misc, and you should then see the provided link at the top of the sheet. It's a little rudimentary right now but functional. And by all means let me know if you ever found a decent portrait image; I just stuck something up that amused me.

Moving forward the campaign wiki will be gradually moving to Obsidian Portal as — well, I'll be honest: all that amazing work Zerg did on fixing up new sheets for the new Saxypunch wiki? I accidentally destroyed it. All of it. Happened while installing the vb4 forum test. Tables = wiped. So while Zerg amazingly viewed this disaster as an opportunity to just rebuild something better, I decided it would be smarter to keep the campaign somewhere I couldn't break it so easily. I can't thank him enough for his help in all of this, but honestly it's time for us to stop trying to reinvent the wheel. Honestly I don't know why I didn't put this business on OP in the first place, other than pride.

Gra-fa-zut's sheet should also be Obsidian-ready by the time the next adventure starts, and from that day forward we can bid a fond farewell to MediaWiki, which has served us slowly and unreliably for many a month now.

Any of you who'd like to sign up for OP, feel free; let me know, and I'll invite you to the campaign and then, shit, you could edit your own sheet whoooooooa. This is optional, of course, but if you wanna then it's groovy with me.

This invitation does not extend to Skills, that cheaty fucker.

No code

Also, Lead the Attack was totally nerfed in the July 2010 errata. But I guess since Mr. Pang didn't update the card, he's gotta honor it
That seems fair, and by fair I mean I'm lazy. Changing how someone's powers work midfight would be a dick move.

Also Filth Fever doesn't do anything until the encounter ends! No disease does. We've been over this. I promise to totally roll the Endurance checks if the Kraken gets away alive, ok? Then when your next character joins he can fight an insane, rabid Kraken.

I was speaking idiomatically.

No, they're hyena-people. I don't think D&D has any rat-people natively, aside from were-rats. Also: a joke.

Anyways I'm not specifying who earned a card from here on out since I don't want people to feel like they're steppin' on toes or whatever

Now, if chess is your game you wanna save this for an ooze of some kind, at least something with no hands.

Because I'm actually really bad at chess and I need an excuse

^^^ this would actually result in impromptu Blood Bowl

which all right!

So if you don't specify who earned it, then who gets to decide its usage?
Whoever decides to use it first. You cannot own a card, it belongs to the party.

COMMUNISM

This also eliminates the problem of hoarders who just sit on cards forever because "they might need it later".

Ahem. So, that concludes Adventure IX. Adventure X will begin in (give or take) a week, giving those of us working on the campaign site time to update it with the incoming characters. It's been a long time since three people entered the game all at once, and I'm just too damned lazy to copy all that shit over in any kind of a hurry.

When the tenth adventure begins it will include an in-setting explanation of the guild mechanic. I'm probably not going to include voting on adventures for a while since it makes me feel like I need to provide some illusion of endless options and in so doing I stuck up a bunch of adventures that were, well, kind of crap.

IN THE MEANTIME I'll be starting up a quick, very rules-light game called Everyone is John. Hopefully the VERY SIMPLE RULES will encourage some folks outside the usual Basement dwellers to participate, I guess we'll see.

I sure do love talking to myself

Guys I don't want to undermine your sovereignty or anything but is there any reason we need three separate chat threads?

I, um... that is... THE GODS! don't think it's... acceptable to pass, er, used beads on to your friends, er, especially when you found them in a used state yourself, or, rather, dug them out of the very body cavity in which they were, so to speak, embedded.

'cuz that's gross.

Those frozen dwarves you found had some weird hobbies is what I guess I'm trying to say here

So, Pang, to clarify, are we starting the next adventure under guild style rules or are we keeping the same adventurers?

Yeah, guild kicks in at the very beginning of the next adventure (or, continuity-wise, just before. Might do a flashback. Might do an interlude. We'll see). So Zeph and Hawkeye rotate out, having had 2 consecutives, and the randomly-selected Shin, Animechanic and CetteHamsterLa rotate in to fill the party.

So the new party will be:

wvlf (Gra-fa-zut)
Deni (Samwise)
Shin (Beefi Kertanz, Minotaur Barbarian)
Cette (Uxig "Slim" Uxigson, Kobold Barbarian/Runepriest)
Chanic (Garold Fangus, Shifter Seeker)

Hammer to the face is totally a valid strategic response to all problems.

On a totally unrelated note Pang what are your feelings on the cannonball special in place of a charge?
The charging rules do not in any way specify that the individual making the charge must be touching the ground. =D

Pang, special request from a cheapskate.

Is it possible for you to download Compendium data with MasterPlan 9.5 and share the .library files here?
AFAIK Masterplan hasn't been able to download the Compendium ever since the developer received a C&D about precisely that back in April/May. It's possible he's tried some sneaky end-run around the Hasbro lawyers but I doubt it.

I don't know what the fuck we're going to do around here when the Char Builder goes web-based. I don't mind sharing to some degree but 1 account for 3 campaigns and some 20 players is... well.

There hasn't been an explicit announcement as such, but a lot of things different devs have said kind of add up in that direction. It's the smart move from the WotC perspective; I expect they have more to gain from selling a product to Mac/Linux gamers and sealing up their biggest piracy hole than they have to lose from pissing off a few Luddites (and several thousand pirates).

As a customer I'm 100% on board with the move, but as a DM for people who aren't customers, well. Still, if it's web-based the "5 install limit" no longer makes sense and I can just share an account with the group I guess...

There's nowhere I can't reach.

I just might possibly be grasping at straws here, but could you try with MasterPlan 8.8, supposedly the last one with Compendium access?

Also, I would expect WotC to implement some kind of IP check, or possibly restrict the session to one IP logged in at a time. Because if they don't, one person from, say, SA, can post his login credentials. And that would be sad.
No dice, just throws up a bunch of Unhandled Exceptions.

I don't see mega-communities like SA or 4chan being a real risk to the "just log in" methodology, since if there's one thing you can count on goons or channers for, it's ruining a good thing for everyone else. If you log in to someone's DDI account you can cancel it for them (and get their CC info if you're persistent), so nobody's going to hand it out to total unknowns.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

I'm not sure I understand the question. If you wanted to print your sheet for some reason couldn't you just do that from within the Char Builder?

If you don't like the formatting of the default sheet you're not forced to use it; that's why I've encouraged folks to sign up so they can arrange their own sheets in whatever way suits them. You just dump the html / textile code in the "crunch" section and it's really no harder to work with than the wiki was.

D&D Tools - Character Sheet Creator offers an alternate preset to work from; it's not as elegant IMO but there's a little more room to cram in descriptions & etc.

The whole point of a meat shield is to get hurt for the benefit of others, and Shin's PC is literally composed of savory beef. I'm just saying.

Zerg, I'm not going to accuse you of anything, but if you happen to accidentally stumble upon information regarding this adventure's particular challenges, please keep it to yourself. Or we will have words.

(The words will be uttered in an angry voice with many non-sibilant fricatives.)

Yeah, Skills made power cards for feats & rituals & etc too and figured out a tidy way to actually arrange them in something other than a vertical column, but I've not had much luck duplicating his work. This is why I suggest people to join Obsidian with us, then your sheet can show or not-show whatever the fuck you want it to. Otherwise you can wait for Skills to get more free time or wait for me to get more competent at coding; neither of these are on the immediate agenda.

In the meantime MOST feats are simple enough that you can just jam quick explanations into the NOTES field of your sheet, under the cash.
