The Devil's Beating His Wife

If you're really interested in the origins of common-but-bizarre phrases, I'd suggest you read A Hog On Ice by Charles E. Funk. I had this book when I was a teenager and I learned something new each time I picked it up.

As for the "devil beating his wife," I've never even heard that saying. I doubt that particular one is in the book I mentioned, seeing as it's a bit of an off-color remark. But you never know, the book has apparently gone through a couple updates.

As a sidenote, it seems peculiar to think that the devil would even take a wife. Marriage is one of the seven holy sacraments and whatnot. It sort of stands against the devil's nature. He's probably more of an adulterer, if anything. Though I've always found the depiction of Satan as a homosexual to be fairly apt, as that supposedly ticks God off, I guess. I probably shouldn't think about your doofy saying so deeply.
