The Devil's Beating His Wife
Today on campus it started raining. Not so peculiar. However, it was raining while the sun was shining. My friends mother told me when I was a kid that when this happens, the devil is beating his wife. I've heard it in a few other places and I have always wondered the story behind this, I couldn't really justify the title logically, so I'd like to know the mythology behind it.
Are there any other metaphors you don't get or other links to mythology that we use but don't commonly know the stories? |
If you're really interested in the origins of common-but-bizarre phrases, I'd suggest you read A Hog On Ice by Charles E. Funk. I had this book when I was a teenager and I learned something new each time I picked it up.
As for the "devil beating his wife," I've never even heard that saying. I doubt that particular one is in the book I mentioned, seeing as it's a bit of an off-color remark. But you never know, the book has apparently gone through a couple updates. As a sidenote, it seems peculiar to think that the devil would even take a wife. Marriage is one of the seven holy sacraments and whatnot. It sort of stands against the devil's nature. He's probably more of an adulterer, if anything. Though I've always found the depiction of Satan as a homosexual to be fairly apt, as that supposedly ticks God off, I guess. I probably shouldn't think about your doofy saying so deeply. |
I've heard that particular saying quite a bit (the one about the devil beating his wife if it's raining while the sun is out), but I can't tell you anything more than it started somewhere in the south. I'd assume Crash doesn't hear it because he's rather north of the mason dixon.

When I was little and visiting some relatives down south they told me that thunder was just God bowling. I was very unsatisfied with this answer. |
I had a college professor from Alberta who would occasionally make the offhand remark that it was time to "shit or go blind". I still have no idea what that idiom actually means.

Rain, of course, was God crying. Based off that, I could never figure out what snow was. |
Snow is God brushing his hair.

I can never make snow angels again. D:
