What's so appealing about grapefruit?

I enjoy grapefruit juice more than the actual fruit itself, since it seems to have much more flavor. The bitter, yet fruity flavor is really what makes me like it, although it was more of an acquired taste, much like my sudden taste for bittermelon.

In the summer, my parents roast garlic and add it and salt to the grapefruit. It sounds gross, but I love it.

Does that mask the bitterness in any way? I've heard of people putting salt on fruit, but not garlic.
