What's so appealing about grapefruit?

I honestly don't understand how some people find the act consuming this oddity a pleasurable experience. I mean, yeah, it looks cool being red and all, but hey you've got blood-oranges for that. And yeah, it's suppose to be good for you, but so are all other sorts of fruites and vegetables. It just has an incredibly bitter after-taste. For those of you who actualy like it, what exactly is it about this bitter fruit that you find so "tasty" ? |
I think it's an aquired taste, like beer and coffee. I grew up eating it so I think it's awesome, but I can see where you're coming from. Try sprinkling sugar on it. That cuts the bitter taste.
|
Even better, put some honey on them and put them in the microwave for a few seconds. Grapefruits taste a lot better that way. I hardly ever eat them, though. I can't remember the last time I've tasted one.
|
The aftertaste sucks ass, but they're still tasty at first, IMO. I especially enjoy grapefruit juice.
|
The only thing I don't like about eating grapefruit is how hard it is sometimes to cut it all out of the skin. It can get a little messy. Other than that, I love them, and I find that the aftertaste is something that you can come to enjoy. They do need to be sugared somewhat, and I tend to leave it with the sugar on for a little while before eating, so that the fruit absorbs it. Brown sugar for the win.
As to what it is about the flavour that I like, I find it's a great breakfast fruit, because it wakes me up with that really powerful tang. |
There's actually some form that's really sweet when it's in season, so my mom fed me that whie growing up so I didn't have much of an adversion.
Besides, it's pretty. |
There's this food scientist in Philidelphia that explained once that the bitter taste sort of excites people. As in, when someone rides on a roller coaster, it excites them b/c it's dangerous, but a safe kind of dangerous. The same way with bitter foods: His study shown that most people enjoy the bitter taste when it reaches the peak of bitterness (as in, it's not overly bitter, but comes close). That may explain one reason why some people like grapefruit.
I like it b/c of the unique taste. It's got a bit of tart to it that wakes up the tastebuds. It sort of makes oranges seem bland (even though I do like oranges). |
I guess its one of those things you grew up eating . Maybe its one of those things that you either like it or hate it fruits.Try using it recipies and stuff, eventually you'll grow to like it.. hopefully :).

I enjoy grapefruit juice more than the actual fruit itself, since it seems to have much more flavor. The bitter, yet fruity flavor is really what makes me like it, although it was more of an acquired taste, much like my sudden taste for bittermelon.
|
It is definitely an acquired taste.
|
No, you know what's worse? Bitter melon.
I'd eat grapefruit over that any day. But I like grapefruit anyways so I'd eat it regardless. |
Well the fact that it speeds up your metabolism somewhat makes it psychologically appealing too I guess.
|
In the summer, my parents roast garlic and add it and salt to the grapefruit. It sounds gross, but I love it.

I enjoy eating half a grapefruit for breakfast at times, when it's sweet and bitter. Sweet grapefruits are great, but if it's just bitter, then it doesn't taste that good. I'm probably alone on liking the aftertaste. It's better than the aftertaste of milk. I usually eat my fruit last during breakfast, and grapefruit is one of them.
|
I'm not a fan of the grapefruit. I first tried it in the second grade. I did not like it so I never tried it again. One of the few times where it actually only took one chance to learn my lesson.
|
I'm not a fan of grapefruits but I'll eat them on occasion (usually when my mom shoves it at me).
The bitter taste of it turns me away - oranges are where it's at. |
I used to eat a grapefruit half every morning as part of breakfast, but can't anymore as grapefruit interferes with one of my (many) medications.
