I personally don't like iTunes 7 (runs slow as fuck on my computer, retardedly wants to check gapless playback when I don't even use it - no option to stop it besides clicking the 'x' and hogs memory like a raped Firefox left open over the span of a month) even though I use it anyway because I like to stay updated - although that's not what the OP asked XD

I've used YamiPod in the past. It's a decent program - free, not cluttered with ads and shit, and doesn't run slow - but it did screw up my 4th Gen once (though, that was also because of several other things on the iPod, such as Linux).

Also, like killmoms pointed out, you shouldn't ever just "pull out" anything USB from your computer. There's a reason for that 'Safely Remove Hardware' icon in your Taskbar. >:] As for storage...that's what I'm partially using my 4th Gen for, but only because I have 90% of my music on my 30GB 5th Gen (which is almost out of space ;_; ) so it's not a big deal.

How ya doing, buddy?

In any event, that's a one-time process, which checks your library for gapless information. From then on it'll just do it real quick as you import or add stuff. And, I guess it'd hog memory if you used CoverFlow all the time, but that shit's just fucking logic. I've had it open for a couple weeks now, and it's chilling at 40MB, so. Have you gotten the 7.0.1 update? I heard that resolved a number of hitchy/memory consuming behaviors on the Windows side for a number of people.
I got it yesterday, actually. The update, from start to finish, took about an hour. An hour. I've nearly installed SUSE Linux sooner than that. But putting that aside, I haven't given it much time to see if there's a noticeable difference (I was irritated enough to begin with). I have nothing special running on iTunes whatsoever - in fact, if I knew there was a 100% stable alternative to it, I wouldn't use it - and even though it hangs at about 40/50MB, it still slows the rest of my system down (tabbing over to other windows, for example, becomes an exercise in Zen-like patience). I may have only 512MB of RAM, but c'mon now. XD

There's nowhere I can't reach.

This is something I found for foobar2000, but just like everything else (that isn't iTunes) it's at your own risk to use.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Try to transfer them back via YamiPod?
