Watermelon

Summer is here and so is watermelon. Possibly one of the greatest fruits that have ever graced the earth.

So this lazy afternoon I was eating watermelon, and it reminded me of the time when one of my friends, who was a Japanese exchange student for a year, exclaimed that I spit out my seeds. At first I thought he came from some weird background (then I just assumed it's because he's Japanese). I told him I thought everyone spit out their seeds...? And he says he swallows them. For proof I told him to eat a slice and show me. He did and he just swallowed all the seeds along with the watermelon! I know it's not Asian or something (I don't think it's Japanese either), but I thought it was common practice to spit out watermelon seeds.

I asked him why he does it, doesn't it taste nasty, etc. He just said it's because he's lazy. What???

Anyway, this brings up the question: spit or swallow? (no, nothing sick here folks)

And salting fruit isn't newfangled... my mom enjoys salting her watermelon too.

I think chewing seeds deters from the real sweetness of the fruit. For example, I also spit out grape seeds. (But I have heard of some people who knife out grape seeds as well! wtf...) And who eats apple seeds? All of these seeds are small, but at the same time chewing them releases a taste that spoils the real meat of the fruit. =\

I have eaten some seedless watermelons that are simply divine. Probably some new crop type technology or something.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.
