Watermelon
 

Summer is here and so is watermelon. Possibly one of the greatest fruits that have ever graced the earth.

So this lazy afternoon I was eating watermelon, and it reminded me of the time when one of my friends, who was a Japanese exchange student for a year, exclaimed that I spit out my seeds. At first I thought he came from some weird background (then I just assumed it's because he's Japanese). I told him I thought everyone spit out their seeds...? And he says he swallows them. For proof I told him to eat a slice and show me. He did and he just swallowed all the seeds along with the watermelon! I know it's not Asian or something (I don't think it's Japanese either), but I thought it was common practice to spit out watermelon seeds.

I asked him why he does it, doesn't it taste nasty, etc. He just said it's because he's lazy. What???

Anyway, this brings up the question: spit or swallow? (no, nothing sick here folks)

Spit. I don't like swallowing seeds. I didn't know people actually swallowed seeds either. Watemelon are nummy, and Bubble Tea watermelon flavour is also nummy. I don't eat too much of it though.

By the way, I eat watermelon with knife and fork. Am I the only one?

Well, spitting them out is too barbaric and swallowing them is gross. I guess I'm a wimp. By the way, Honeydew Melon > Water Melon. =O

i pick them out before i eat the watermelon. i can't stand chewing watermelon and all of the sudden CRUNCH. plus i don't want a watermelon growing in my belly D:

Pretty much word for word with the two posts above. I'd rather get rid of the seeds before I eat so I can just enjoy my food.

I adore watermelon, but I am one of those meticulous idiots who picks out every seed...even the little white ones.

Also, watermelon MUST be salted. Mmmmmm....

I can't be the only person who swallows the seeds here. They're so small that it's honestly more trouble than it's worth to try and spit them out.

I take out what I can whenever I eat watermelon. Even seedless watermelon have the flat white seeds, so I try to take those out as well.

Watermelon is awesome. I just get the seedless ones, though, and I eat the little white seeds. Ain't no thang.

Yeah, the seedless ones can be plenty tasty and the white seeds aren't even noticable, so I try to eat them more often. If there's the dark black seeds around I'll do a mix of picking them out before I take a bit and spitting them out.

I love watermelons, but I only buy seedless ones.
The rare times I do eat regular ones I use a knife to flick the seeds
out on my plate.

Anyone have watermelon with yellow flesh?

I've seen it many time, baha, but I've never tried it. For those who have, does it taste any different from 'normal', pink watermelon?

Yellow watermelon tastes the same. Yummay.

And salting fruit isn't newfangled... my mom enjoys salting her watermelon too.

My parents salt mangos... It's alright I guess.

I usually eat the seedless ones. I eat the white ones, but if it's seeded, i'd spit them out. They're not worth my time to pick them out individually.

We get to tend the huge watermelons with seeds about the size of sunflower seeds. I'm one of those "meticulous idiots" so I pick them out.

I never liked putting salt on watermelons. Fruits are supposed to be sweet, and I like 'em that way.

omfg I absolutely love watermelon. Pure watermelon, watermelon juice, watermelon tea, watermelon chewing gum, watermelon tobacco. If I had a child, I would name it Watermelon, or Watermelon Man or something like that.

I prefer red watermelon over honey (yellow) watermelon, because the red watermelon seems to be juicier; but I like honeymelon just as much!

To answer your question, though, I swallow. I am good in swallowing things.

Oh my fucking god, the poll results are shocking. What's wrong with you, you little princesses. You won't die from eating some goddamn watermelon seeds. I just chew them and swallow.

Don't mind them, they are mainly Youass Americans, the seeds in watermelons could be of some terrorist origin

I always pick the seeds out so I can just eat my fruit; here at the music summer course I'm taking they have the best watermelon alllll the time, so I've been eating more of it than I have the last three years combined.

Kind of on topic, but has anyone else found that seedless watermelon just doesn't taste as good on the average with the regular kind? I've found it to be true, but maybe it's just my imagination....

I think chewing seeds deters from the real sweetness of the fruit. For example, I also spit out grape seeds. (But I have heard of some people who knife out grape seeds as well! wtf...) And who eats apple seeds? All of these seeds are small, but at the same time chewing them releases a taste that spoils the real meat of the fruit. =\

I have eaten some seedless watermelons that are simply divine. Probably some new crop type technology or something.

Depends on the kind of seed, I guess. The hard black ones I tend to spit out. The soft white ones (undeveloped ones?) get swallowed.

If I'm feeling real lazy, though, I'll just swallow it.

I'm a bit lazy when it comes to watermeloning. If it's got the big seeds, I'll just spit it out as I eat. If I happen to swallow one, oh well. The smaller ones in the "seedless" watermelons always get eaten.
