What I meant was don't just broadcast the bad news, tell us what we need to circumvent/prevent/soften the blow.

Yeah, I think so too. That's a great way to bait viewers to tune in later on.
"Next week on Channel 7! World War 3 is just around the corner, learn what you need in your fallout shelter!"
When you report on wide trends, sweeping generalizations are bound to be made in order to induce more fear in viewers. That's what sells. Local news media is especially guilty of this needless fear-mongering. I usually ignore such news outlets.
