Memory Question

Hello I just bought a single 1 gig of ram stick to add with the other two 512 meg ones I currently have.My question is why does my comp only see 1.50 gig shouldn't it say 2gig?Im not that good with pc's does this mean that one of my sticks is not being used if so how do I turn it on? Many Thanks.
