Hello I just bought a single 1 gig of ram stick to add with the other two 512 meg ones I currently have.My question is why does my comp only see 1.50 gig shouldn't it say 2gig?Im not that good with pc's does this mean that one of my sticks is not being used if so how do I turn it on? Many Thanks.

He basically added two 512 Megs of Ram to a Computer that already has a gig. It should show 2 gigs of ram now, but instead it only shows a gig and a half.

SailorV: Do a few things:

1.) Make sure both pieces of Ram are securely placed into the slots. Check to see if the Ram is loose and make sure both sticks are in the slots.

2.) If both are, then take one of them out and restart. If it's still 1.5 Gigs, then you know that either A.) the Ram you just took out is fault or B.) the slot you put the Ram in is fault.

To check for A.) (bad Ram)

1.) Put it into another computer. Make sure that computer can handle that type of Ram. If a memory increase doesn't show up, then it's the Ram and you should replace it for a new one.

To check for B.) (faulty slot)

If you do A.), and the Ram is OK, you can almost be assured that there is a faulty slot for placing Ram into. However, just to be sure:

1.) Take the 512 Meg stick out of the computer you originally put it in, and place it into the OTHER slot. Check your computer. If there is no memory increase, then you know it's definitely the slot. If it's the slot um, err, you've got problems because I think that requires a new motherboard.

Very firstly check for RAM placement. Depending if your ram is single/double-sided you'll have to set them in the RAM slots according to your mobo manual.

boot memtest86 and check if it detects all RAM

If none on the above comment reveal any problems..there's a small chance it could be the bios (but i think this happened usually with old motherboards..not the new ones, but who knows). I would check bios updates notes for your motherboard if it addresses it.
