Truthfully, I already own a GC, but I hold a theory that how hard a console is to pirate for often affects how easily people buy one. PS1 was far easier to mod and play copied games on than the Saturn or N64. Similarly, a lot of people are already talking about modding the 360 and even PS3. Everyone hated carts because they were more expensive than CDs and also difficult to copy.

A factor, but not the defining one. By far. The average Joe looking to play some FIFA or MADDEN probably doesn't even know what modding is. Brand name and advertising help Sony sell consoles.
