250GB HDD not coming up in Windows
Well, as the title says my 250GB Western Digital SATA drive isn't being detected by Windows, and even in the BIOS it won't detect a drive there. The strange thing is that when it does get to the OS, it's found as a removable drive (along with my 74GB Raptor that holds the OS and runs fine).
What should I do? Change the jumper setting on back? I've looked and it has a number of options back there, but since I bought them both OEM, there was no manual. Problem #1: 250GB SATA HDD isn't detected by BIOS or shown in My Computer Problem #2: Both SATA drives are being detected as removable in Windows, like a USB mouse or somecrap. Thanks for the help in advance. How ya doing, buddy? ![]() The text is part of the image and the two squires aren't exactly even. |
You'd need to be a little more specific about some things first. What kind of motherboard are you using? Is the invisible SATA drive attached to an onboard SATA controller chip that isn't part of the chipset itself?
Check to see if your BIOS is set to auto-detect drives. Is the drive usable and does it display the full capacity (about 232GB formatted, in your case i'd imagine)? If you're not sure what your drive is, it MAY be possible to use a diagnostic utility such as this one (http://www.utilitygeek.com/details.php?fileid=28) to find out the model number of your SATA drive, then do an internet search and find the relevant manual/utilities for it. There's nowhere I can't reach. ![]() |
SATA is hotpluggable. I don't have SATA in my current systems, but it's very possible that the HDs ARE handled as removable devices.
As a general rule, if it's not detected in BIOS, the Jumper's wrong or it's dead. This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
Well, I tried all of the jumper settings on the remaining seven SATA channels(LanpartyUT SLI-DR Expert). It makes this horrible "click, click, cliiiiick" sound when simply via power only.
The BIOS is set to auto detect and even before the computer was finished tried to get it to see the drive's capacity, but at best all I get is it's name. You guys think it's dead? Most amazing jew boots ![]() The text is part of the image and the two squires aren't exactly even. |
With the Click of Death and the lack of presence in most situations, that'd be my gut instinct. Is it still RMA-able?
I was speaking idiomatically. |
As Ulysses suggested, I think it may be worth running Western Digital's drive diag tool, which should be found here: http://support.wdc.com/download/?cxml=n&pid=999&swid=3 hopefully it'll pinpoint the problem.
What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? |
FELIPE NO |
So, are you guys in agreement that this thing is busted? And if so, what do you think is wrong with it? I need to tell the Newegg operator something in order to get it replaced. What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? ![]() The text is part of the image and the two squires aren't exactly even. |
The phrase is "It's dead" or "It's dead, Jim." Tell them about it not being recognized and it clicking and I doubt they'll ask anything else.
Jam it back in, in the dark. |
Well, I just told the guy about the clicking and how even with BIOS updates and the official diagnostic tool being used, it was a dud. He simply said ok and sent the email with the RMA details in it.
