As far as I know, the IQ test wasn't originally designed to see who was a genius and who wasn't, but rather the opposite: to detect people with deficiencies.
So, people getting insanely high IQs aren't necessarily geniuses - some questions are just patterns, which once learnt, can skyrocket your results in a similar test.

Really? The questions in Tickle's classic test is pretty different to me. Plus, the MENSA test consists of only images but different pattern on all questions. Soo... I don't know. Guess you should try it anyways and see what your results are. =\

...weird. The last time I took a proper IQ test, with cube counting and math problems and everything, I scored 168 too! I only got 117 on the Tickle test, though.

IQ isn't really that meaningful of a number, though...I mean, it tries to take so many characteristics about a person's mind, turn them into numbers, and then turn THOSE numbers into one nice big one. It doesn't measure creative, physical, or applied abilities at all, either. It's really more useful for spotting people who need additional help learning than it is at finding geniuses.

True IQ tests would rank participants by percentile...so I don't think that there is any such thing as a maximum IQ score. Even the best regular tests aren't very accurate at the low and high ends of the scale, though...only 1 in 100,000 people have IQs above 165 or below 35 if I understand this all correctly, so it's a bit tough to represent people who are that gifted or challenged on a simple numeric scale. I don't think that the Tickle test is as accurate as the Stanford-Binet Test, either!

It's kind of a bad habit to brag about having a really high IQ, though. The test was originally designed to spot students who would need additional help with basic math and reading, not so that all of these high-IQ boys' clubs could pop up everywhere.

...by the way, I'm copying this out of my educational psychology textbook, so I might be getting everything completely wrong. Sorry!

I remember taking an IQ test but it wasn't for Mensa. It was just to test the academic ability for students in North Carolina. This was during my Senior year in High School so it was back in Early 2003. When I got the results back, I thought it was the average score.

I had thought that 180 was considered higher than normal, 120 lower than normal, and 140 around average-ish (IQs were never really talked about so I simply estimated what was high and low). That showed how ignorant I was. My score was 139, and I must say I was shocked to find out that 140+ is actually considered high and I was just a single point away from it. I really do not feel like I have a 139 IQ though o.O

Even people who come across as painfully stupid can be a genius in disguise. I don't think I'm a genius, though. Remember, a number is just a number. No one is so smart they know how to do everything they're asked to. I'm pretty sure Paris Hilton can't build a Plane engine from broken scrap parts. A genius, by today's standards, seems to be generalized by how much basic knowledge (history, physics, psychology) and mathmatical ability you have. What really matters is if you're a genius in a specific field of study (i.e. your career). That would mean you'd be the go-to guy/girl for any information regarding that field. Just because Paris Hilton has an IQ of 144 doesn't mean I'd go to her and ask advice on how to code my own video game.

Long-winded story short, an IQ is just a number. Just do your best in school and your career. In the end, that's really all that matters.

I'm not sure which IQ test you're reading about, but everytime I've learned about the IQ test, it was originally desinged in France. At the time, they didn't have enough money to provide further education to all students, so they designed a test to see whom would suceed within a school environment, and thus used the funds to their benefit over the other childrens. Looked it up online, and source seem to support your claim. Wonder if its just like the whole columbus = great vs columbus = idiot arguement.

The average IQ is 100. As the population gets smarter (well, knows more), the IQ test in continually ajusted to keep the average at 100. The standard deviation is 15 points, roughly 68% of the populace is within 15 points on both sides of 100. The next standard deviation on each side also contains 14% each. Roughly 96% of the populace is between 70 - 130 in IQ. This leaves only roughly around 4% for below 70 and above 130 IQ. It seems like everyone likes to report a very high IQ, however, the ammount of claims never seem to match up with the proper percentage. Funny how that works.

Also, online IQ tests are a joke. They are right there with the FREE XBOX 360 banners and pop-ups.

They have very low reliability across tests. Low ammount of questions with a high ammount of variance, and no measure of validity. Every now and then they might nail someone on the head, but it'll be out of probability, not any accurate measure.

I did it when I was eight years old. It was monitored by professionals. I scored 150, and it was a great help to me, since I skipped a grade because of it.

Not to discourage you, but you do know that IQ tests are harder as you age right? Not to say harder; more like they are more strict in giving you higher scores. If a person were to score 180 at the age of 8, that same person might only get 110 at the age of 17.
