Duke Nukem Forever: 2006?

Quote:
The May 2006 issue of Computer Games Magazine, which includes a cover feature previewing 3D Realms and Human Head Studios' long-awaited FPS Prey, has also included fresh information on 3D Realms's epochally long in development Duke Nukem Forever.

{...}

3DR's George Broussard also demonstrated world interactivity that includes Duke standing in front of a computer and emailing the player, if he provides his email address for the game. But, according to the piece, Broussard was bashful, overall, about showing off the game, commenting: "The problem is that when we show it, people are going to be like, 'Yeah, whatever'. Honestly, at this point we just want to finish it."

A recently reported-on Take-Two financial filing shows that the game's long-time publisher is also keen to see it done, noting: "One other notable payment was the renegotiation of a $6 million charge due upon delivery of the final PC version of Duke Nukem Forever back in March 2005. The epic delay of 3D Realms' shooter has meant that $4.25 million of the final milestone payment has already been paid, alongside the promise of a final $500,000 upon the commercial release of Duke Nukem Forever prior to December 31, 2006."

You know this is really not going to happen. This game is never going to be released. If it actually is, I bet you the graphics will be from like 10 years ago when they started making it.

What engine are they even using for it? Last I heard it was Source or Unreal 2, or Quake 3 or something.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

That's the thing.
From what George Broussard is saying, he won't even bother showing it off so that him and his team can concentrate on finishing the game.

I'd guess that it's a rather modern engine though. Something along the lines of Unreal 3, Doom 3, Source, or even the Lithtech 'Jupiter EX' from FEAR.

Oh, that game! Sheesh! Back in 1997 when I knew about it I was sooo happy to know a sequel to the great DN3D was to be made! But then, (around)nine years passed and it wasn't released yet. I kind of stopped waiting for it...

You know, a game that takes 9 years to be finished not only has to be good, it has to be a classic! It can't be released and turn out to be just another first person shooter.

I remember when it was even projected to be on the GC! Cause I had this preview magazine for when the Xbox and GC were coming out and Duke Nukem Forever was one of the GC games. That's why I primarily got a GC. Hoping for this game but damn. Nine years this game has been in development! Oh, well. We all can be hopeful, right?

Jam it back in, in the dark.

There's always the chance that DN Forever is some sort of sociological experiment. How much time will the players wait for a game that will never be released.

I specially don't like the previous release date they had on 3DRealms' site: "when it's done" :/

I'm secretly hoping it's an utter trainwreck of a game. At this point, it has to either be spectacularly awesome, or spectacularly awful.

What publisher would let this drag on for nine years, though? There are fully completed games that have been axed for the sake of profit margins (or foolish preconceptions about profit margins). After five, they should have just pulled the plug.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Even though it's been a dreadfully long wait, I still have high hopes for the game. Duke Nukem 3D remains one of my favorite shooters ever and I just can't imagine 3D Realms screwing this up.

All it has to have is reasonably fun gameplay, unusual enemies/weapons/items, and great one liners and I'll be happy.

Now, now, don't be too harsh. Daikatana has half of that. I mean, it's a classic. In its own way.

Won't this game (and probably Daikatana) be ingrained in our memories forever, just for the sheer insanity of what has happened with it?

This could just be the best marketing strategy ever.

I'm looking forward to playing this when they port it to the Phantom console.

any screens or scans from the magazine?

p.s.
Daikatana was so terrible it was legendary... John Romero was just plain silly when he made that game.

The funny thing about this game is the fact that no versions of it have been leaked. Just watch, in 2010 it comes out and everyone is so blown away by the game, they'll think it'll take over a decade to make a decent game.
Of course Half-Life didn't take too long to develop, but it was a 20 hour game, DNF should clock in a 500 hours considering the time and energy put into it so far.
