Duke Nukem Forever: 2006?

The May 2006 issue of Computer Games Magazine, which includes a cover feature previewing 3D Realms and Human Head Studios' long-awaited FPS Prey, has also included fresh information on 3D Realms's epochally long in development Duke Nukem Forever.

3DR's George Broussard also demonstrated world interactivity that includes Duke standing in front of a computer and emailing the player, if he provides his email address for the game. But, according to the piece, Broussard was bashful, overall, about showing off the game, commenting: "The problem is that when we show it, people are going to be like, 'Yeah, whatever'. Honestly, at this point we just want to finish it."

A recently reported-on Take-Two financial filing shows that the game's long-time publisher is also keen to see it done, noting: "One other notable payment was the renegotiation of a $6 million charge due upon delivery of the final PC version of Duke Nukem Forever back in March 2005. The epic delay of 3D Realms' shooter has meant that $4.25 million of the final milestone payment has already been paid, alongside the promise of a final $500,000 upon the commercial release of Duke Nukem Forever prior to December 31, 2006."

You know this is really not going to happen. This game is never going to be released. If it actually is, I bet you the graphics will be from like 10 years ago when they started making it.

What engine are they even using for it? Last I heard it was Source or Unreal 2, or Quake 3 or something.

Matt Apr 13, 2006 12:12 AM

That's the thing.
From what George Broussard is saying, he won't even bother showing it off so that him and his team can concentrate on finishing the game.

I'd guess that it's a rather modern engine though. Something along the lines of Unreal 3, Doom 3, Source, or even the Lithtech 'Jupiter EX' from FEAR.

The Duke Nukem Forever engine.

Oh, that game! Sheesh! Back in 1997 when I knew about it I was sooo happy to know a sequel to the great DN3D was to be made! But then, (around)nine years passed and it wasn't released yet. I kind of stopped waiting for it...

You know, a game that takes 9 years to be finished not only has to be good, it has to be a classic! It can't be released and turn out to be just another first person shooter.

RYU Apr 13, 2006 09:19 AM

I hope this game release it I'm wait since 1998,is look impossible but is still hopes.

DBCE Slayer Apr 13, 2006 09:53 AM

I remember when it was even projected to be on the GC! Cause I had this preview magazine for when the Xbox and GC were coming out and Duke Nukem Forever was one of the GC games. That's why I primarily got a GC. Hoping for this game but damn. Nine years this game has been in development!:( Oh, well. We all can be hopeful, right?

Umma Apr 13, 2006 10:11 AM

There's always the chance that DN Forever is some sort of sociological experiment. How much time will the players wait for a game that will never be released.

I specially don't like the previous release date they had on 3DRealms' site: "when it's done" :/

Monkey King Apr 13, 2006 11:09 AM

I'm secretly hoping it's an utter trainwreck of a game. At this point, it has to either be spectacularly awesome, or spectacularly awful.

What publisher would let this drag on for nine years, though? There are fully completed games that have been axed for the sake of profit margins (or foolish preconceptions about profit margins). After five, they should have just pulled the plug.

Newbie1234 Apr 13, 2006 08:12 PM

Even though it's been a dreadfully long wait, I still have high hopes for the game. Duke Nukem 3D remains one of my favorite shooters ever and I just can't imagine 3D Realms screwing this up.

PUG1911 Apr 14, 2006 01:58 AM

All it has to have is reasonably fun gameplay, unusual enemies/weapons/items, and great one liners and I'll be happy.

Daikatana.

YeOldeButchere Apr 14, 2006 11:21 AM

Now, now, don't be too harsh. Daikatana has half of that. I mean, it's a classic. In its own way.

Rollins Apr 14, 2006 11:33 AM

Won't this game (and probably Daikatana) be ingrained in our memories forever, just for the sheer insanity of what has happened with it?

This could just be the best marketing strategy ever.

I'm looking forward to playing this when they port it to the Phantom console.

Nukkus Apr 24, 2006 10:00 AM

i'm not saying that Daikatana was bad... just that it didn't live up to the hype. i've actually got it installed on my machine...

Azral Apr 24, 2006 01:47 PM

any screens or scans from the magazine?

p.s.
Daikatana was so terrible it was legendary... John Romero was just plain silly when he made that game.

Yeah, that sounds more like the actual release date :p.

evilboris Apr 25, 2006 10:11 AM

I don't know why you guys are speculating wether DN Forever will be a good game or not. Everyone knows it will win the "Game of the Year 2010" award.

Kaiten Apr 25, 2006 12:03 PM

The funny thing about this game is the fact that no versions of it have been leaked. Just watch, in 2010 it comes out and everyone is so blown away by the game, they'll think it'll take over a decade to make a decent game.
Of course Half-Life didn't take too long to develop, but it was a 20 hour game, DNF should clock in a 500 hours considering the time and energy put into it so far.

Zip Apr 25, 2006 01:02 PM

it's because there wasnt anything to leak :(.
There never was a game.

DarkLink2135 Apr 25, 2006 01:59 PM

if this is really all a big hoax, i applaud them for pulling off one of the most awesome video game hoaxes in video game history...

unfortunately that doesnt make any sense :(

Zip Apr 25, 2006 05:57 PM

Phantom is probably a bigger hoax.
