Firefox not starting...

Self-explanatory. Just stopped opening...

I have been over the various Firefox bugs on google, and nothing seems to help.

-There is no 'firefox.exe' process for me to end, so it isnt opening because it is already running.

-I have no addons to cause it to crash, which seem to be the most common reason for firefox crashing.

-This error started when I had version ~2.0 installed, so I deinstalled and installed version 3.0 with no luck.

-Many posts around the internet said to start it in Firefox Safe Mode, which also doesn't open.

Post event logs, in EVT format.

Start > Run > eventvwr.msc

I'm interested in Application and System logs. Right-click them and select "Save log files as..."

There's nowhere I can't reach.

First try creating a new profile:

Go to Start
then Run..
then copy this and press enter ->

firefox.exe -ProfileManager

then Create Profile

If that doesn't work then uninstall Firefox and download a registry cleaner to get rid of all the old Mozilla registry entries, after which you can reinstall Firefox.

I gave it another try. This time I made sure to delete the older settings that the older deinstaller left behind. It works fine now.

However, many more issues have come to my attention...mostly virus related issues.

The previous owner of this laptop didnt run any antivirus software, so this thing is riddled with them. I got rid of many of them, but a few of them keep popping up as Svchost processes and it says the infected file is none other than explorer.exe

Is there any way to fix this short of reinstalling windows? Because it doesnt seem like my antivirus software can fix it.

EDIT: This is OP actually. I didn't know my account was restored, and logged into it on accident. But my old account is restored, woot.

Is the file located in

C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe
or in
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\explorer.exe


If it's "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\explorer.exe" then it's not the real explorer and you need to kill the the process then delete it. You can find good process killers here. --> www.anti-trojan.org/softwaredownloads.html

Personally, I wouldn't bother with disinfection, especially on a laptop that did not belong to me. Just reformat the whole thing and maybe performance would even improve.

The issue here is that I have been using it for months and this only came to my attention now. I would rather disenfect just because I am too lazy to back it up to another computer.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe is the real one

C:\WINDOWS\svchost.exe is fake!

Restart windows in safemode (press F8) and delete the one in the windows directory.

C:\Windows\explorer.exe is a required system file. If THAT is infected then you will, at the LEAST, have to extract a fresh copy from your Windows CD.

I still say reformatting is the best option

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Okay, took a few days of work, and we have eliminated most of the problems, but now there is a trojan that according to the AVG scans, planted itself in my recycle bin.

Now I am having problems finding the recycling bin...I know how bad that sounds. So obviously I cannot remove what I cannot find.

I was speaking idiomatically.

You misunderstand. The recycling bin is there, but when I open up a command prompt and open up the directory for it, there are a few thousands files in it.

In other news...guess what is back? And this is the only website I have gone to or the only web process that I have ran on this laptop....so ya....

I would just be happy if I could get rid of that damned thing T_T The fake files are gone, deleted, but it is still running from somewhere.



EDIT: Would replacing these files with copies from another system running the same settings and windows version be a fix for it assuming that the problem is indeed with the real svchost.exe and explorer.exe files?

None, Necro, given the depths of your problem. I strongly suggest you backup, reformat your system, and be more careful next time.

You have to also delete the registry entries associated with the trojan or the virus will keep starting up and sometimes you can't do that without first running a process killer. - Trojan Removal

also, when you uninstall be sure to delete any folder that is left manually

Weeeee! Back for more computer problems. My laptop though is working fine after the reformating.

So on this desktop I am working on, multiple trojans have been detected inside of the windows volume folder. Access is restricted and the files in question (according to my virus protection) are executables...which if I recall dont belong in the volume folder correct?

So my antivirus cant remove them due to access being restricted to the folder that essentially hold the contents of my disk drives. How can I remove them?

Take ownership of the folder in question, and give yourself full control over it. You must be an Administrator to do this.

Right-click on the folder, click Properties, and go to the Securities tab. Click Add, and in the next dialog box, click Advanced. Another box opens, and you click "Find Now". Look for your account information, then click Ok twice. Tick the box in the Allow column for "Full control". Next, click Advanced, navigate to the "Owner" tab, and highlight your account under the "Change owner to:" section. Tick the box that says "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects" and dismiss all dialogs with Ok.

You should now be able to delete things in the folder at your leisure. Don't go overboard.

tl;dr

If your problem is not with "System Volume Information", read the above sections, you bum. If the problem occurs with your System Volume Information folder, the easiest way to go about it is to disable System Restore, reboot, re-enable it, then reboot.
