Also, is it just me or is the Kingsley's Adventure stream a tad odd?

^^ And my nom is one of two Jap-composed tracks. Weaboo, etc

ENEMY ZERO original soundtrack - Enemy Zero hooked me right from the start, a commendable achievement in itself. Apparently the composer has arranged Mother music before, and it's really noticeable here; the strings, brass and tempo carry a nice sense of whimsy as well as tension. Lacking in memorability, but otherwise a solid attempt.

Immortal 2 - Rain (Bonus Track) has a killer atmosphere and tone, with a drifty space effect. Having said that, it doesn't remind me too much of rain. =/ But it's still, for lack of a better word, a pleasant listen.

Unfortunately, Kingsley's Adventure (Red Book Audio) - Title didn't really do anything for me. The instrumentation, while executed soundly, was a tad grating at times. And the melodies were all kind of lame. I must admit I liked the first minute-and-a-half; too bad the song went down hill from there!

=3 Kirby: Canvas Curse (Game Rip) - Tiny Town is probably my favourite contemporary Kirby tune. The glittery, playful tone and sparkling albeit charmingly glitchy sound quality make for a really cool listen. And the way it develops is really impressive, too. Gotta love that toy-woodwind finish!

Schell Bullet ~Thanaphs68~ - Riot Bluster was a bit hit-and-miss for me. I liked some of the passages, while some others bored me. Specifically, the first half of the track was fairly fleeting, but the second half really engaged me. I think that's 'cause there was more variety and creativity towards the end. Oh well, in the end I think the pros outweigh the cons!

Tiny Tank (Game Rip) - SNOW08 is groooo00vvvAY! A really nice surprise; I was expecting some mundane, perhaps semi-cutesy, militaristic tune. This one's got a really infectious, happy-go-lucky, funky tone that I always go crazy for. ;] This one's definitely a keeper; props to the nominator (mind hooking me up with the rest of the gamerip, nom'er?)!

Brimble, eh? Always produces quality stuff, so let's see here...well, Troddlers (SNES Game Rip) - Tight Time (mission 15) barely passes the litmus test. Some instrumental aspects came across as a bit monotonous, but thankfully the electronic lead saved the day with sparks of awesome. On the whole, though? I don't think it's a track I'll be keeping.

For starters, 0:40 or thereabouts gets a nice big ^____^ of approval from me. Aside from that, this Vigilante 8 (N64 Game Rip) - Dreamland tune was fairly average. Some of the melodic bounciness was cute, but most of it was awkward and bumbling. 0:40 boosts it up a bit, though.

POINTS from the far west~ and two jap things

Rain might be the best track I've heard in this contest since Baba Yetu. It was love right from the first note. And it's a shame for Riot Bluster, which probably could have won my top vote in half the other weeks.

ENEMY ZERO original soundtrack - Enemy Zero
Distinctive Nyman sound, reminiscent of his film works. Hypnotizing composition, albeit oppressive after a while because of the rhythmic notes continuously repeated.

Immortal 2 - Rain (Bonus Track)
That's a good trick, nominating a Hülsbeck-sounding track after a genuine one was offered some resistance. I like the mood, combining new age and electronic flavors into a mostly relaxing atmosphere.

Kingsley's Adventure (Red Book Audio) - Title
From the first time I have heard this piece, I fell under its charm. There is a certain innocence and epic feel to it, and while it is not the grandest and most serious take on medieval music, it fits well for an adventure title. The melody is strong and memorable in my opinion, but it is repeated a bit too often however, although there are many variations of it which make this more tolerable. It could have benifited from a better sounding (ideally live) instrumentation, yet I can still tell which instrument is which.

Kirby: Canvas Curse (Game Rip) - Tiny Town
I've never been a big fan of Kirby music, and unfortunately, "Tiny Town" won't change this yet. It's OK I guess, nothing really bad, but nothing really hooked me and I found the whole piece to be rather simplistic and sounding tiny.

Schell Bullet ~Thanaphs68~ - Riot Bluster
Oh yeah! This is a really good shmup(?) tune with a catchy melody and fabulous sound. A good find for sure.

Tiny Tank (Game Rip) - SNOW08
Ah, Tiny Tank! This game surprisingly has some great music. "SNOW08" is one of the best tracks it has to offer, with its groovy vibe and cool wah-wah guitar performance. The composition is somewhat simple however, but it still works well for a laid-back, happy tune.

Troddlers (SNES Game Rip) - Tight Time (mission 15)
I was only familiar with the music from the PC version, yet I'm glad to find out it sounds good on the SNES (which isn't always the case with conversions). A very rhythmic track, with some interesting parts, but overall, it lacks a bit in the melodic department and thus is not as enjoyable and memorable as other nominations this week.

Vigilante 8 (N64 Game Rip) - Dreamland
Hehe, a lost Jazz Jackrabbit track! This definitely comes from Alex Brandon, its definite tracker sound emanating from the N64. At first I thought it sounded out of place for Vigilante 8, but since it's for a crazy bonus level/location, it's all right. A catchy tune, even though the sound quality is a bit poor as opposed to his PC music.

--------------------

(3 points) Kingsley's Adventure (Red Book Audio) - Title
(2 points) Schell Bullet ~Thanaphs68~ - Riot Bluster
(1 point) Tiny Tank (Game Rip) - SNOW08

ENEMY ZERO original soundtrack - Enemy Zero I was pretty surprised to learn that Nyman had ever done a game score, though I've never actually listened to it. Hearing it now, the piece strikes me as an interesting fusion of jazz and Philip Glass, with a cyclical structure and sax-led texture. It wears out its welcome after a while.

Immortal 2 - Rain (Bonus Track) Another track with a repetitive underlying structure. Not as unique a sound as the Nyman piece, but the synth lead is very fetching and the entire piece has a nice, soothing feel about it.

Kingsley's Adventure (Red Book Audio) - Title The instruments have a rather flat sound, which is too bad, as the composition is actually rather good. The song's got a nice melody that's put through its paces rather well.

Kirby: Canvas Curse (Game Rip) - Tiny Town I really liked the beginning of this, as it felt like the buildup to something terrific. Unfortunately, things kind of fizzle out; there's never the hoped-for explosion, just an extra synth layer and a brief woodwind part.

Schell Bullet ~Thanaphs68~ - Riot Bluster Did this image track get in because it was composed by a VGM artist, or did it just slip thru the cracks? I have to admit I wasn't really paying attention at the time. The music itself is touch and go, with some passages that I really dug and others that elicited no more than a shrug.

Tiny Tank (Game Rip) - SNOW08 I always think of Caribbean licks and wah-wah guitar when I think of snow, don't you? This is all right as far as funk goes, but I'll be the first to admit that funk isn't my favorite genre.

Troddlers (SNES Game Rip) - Tight Time (mission 15) A nice little tune with a very mechanical feel. This one really grew on me during the course of listening.

Vigilante 8 (N64 Game Rip) - Dreamland A definite Brandon track, no question about it. It's got some nice depth and jazzy spunk to it; I'm not sure I'd put it alongside his best works, but it's quite good.

An excellent week all around! This makes two in a row, maybe we can go for a SotW quality hat trick.

The Point Spread
Vigilante 8 - 3 pts.
Enemy Zero - 1 pt.
Immortal 2 - 1 pt.
Troddlers - 1 pt.

Enemy Zero - While it's not unlistenable, this track doesn't really do much to hold my attention. The staccato violins throughout are quite monotonous.

Rain (Bonus Track) - Quite atmospheric, nicely layered, though a lot of it sounds displaced from some undiscovered 80s synthpop album. That's not a bad thing, however.

Title - A strong melody with maybe a little too much repetition in places. Some of the backing instruments were rather weak, particularly the drums. The pacing, however, was very smooth.

Tiny Town - Good: the deep background synths. Not so good: the shrill tone of the lead synth. I would've preferred a softer, warmer sample for the lead. It would've befit the otherwise solid melody better.

Riot Bluster - Complexly layered and wildly frenetic, this track definitely delivers the goods. I'm a total sucker for exotic synth effects and electric guitar. As has been said, Tenpei Sato can be hit and miss, but when he's on, he's on. ZiggyGo sent me the Schell Bullet album some time ago and this was one of the highlights. Nice pick!

SNOW08 - Haha, how often does SotW feature a reggae beat? This may be a first. Though I've known about this track for several years, it still has yet to lose its smooth charms. Gospel organs and wah-wah guitars totally rock. I probably should've nominated this one sooner.

Tight Time (mission 15) - A serviceable melody becomes marred by the awkward juxtapositioning of an overly loud bassline and a muffled top layer. I know this would be a very pleasing tune in any other circumstance but the SNES sound card doesn't grant it justice.

Dreamland - Not at all what I expected, and not at the level of instrument quality that I expected either. I should've noted "N64" before downloading, and that's why it sounds so different than the PSX gamerip ("Slick Clyde" ). But it is what it is, a sorta bouncy, sorta okay melody that didn't receive any benefit from being strapped alongside Nintendo's stubborn refusal to move beyond 1993.

Point Things

3 Points:

Gosh, if the nominations for the upcoming week are going to be stellar, I'm quite certain my humble nomination will be blown away (as usual).

Ok, votes!

(3 points) Immortal 2 - Rain (Bonus Track)
This track really makes my day. So many things about the track are incredibly cool, from the synths to the arrangement. I also like the layering in this piece as well.

(2 points) Kirby Canvas Curse (Game Rip) - Tiny Town
I really like the structure of this piece and its instrumentation. Very nice.

(1 point) Schell Bullet ~Thanaphs68~ - Riot Bluster
Sato can sometimes be a miss for me but this track is pretty good in my books, especially the second half or so.

Special mention to Kingsley's Adventure
