LAN problem

I have my roomate networked with my computer through a switch through my PCI NIC (I have an onboard 10/100 for internet just to point that out). For some reason or another, I can't share a folder then he just leech it through my Network Places, I have to go through My Network Places into one of his shared folders, then drop whatever he wants to leech of me into his folder. I have both NetBIOS and IPX/SPX protocols installed on the NIC that he's going through. I don't know what to do at this point--any help with this? Thanks in advance.

Have you adjusted the permissions on that folder to specifically allow him to have read access to it?

I give him read/write access so that I won't be troubled deleting the file after he's done transferring, at least that's how it used to be. =/

I'm trying do decipher this as best as I can but can he directly access your computer at all using the run command?

Do you have a firewall (windows xp sp2?)? Maybe it's blocking the user to access your computer.

Frankly I've always found sharing files in WIndows difficult and inconsistent. Then troubleshooting is difficult because you don't know whose computer is at fault.

Is your computer a Dell? Dell does some weird things to the networking components on their OEM Windows CDs.

Yeah, File and Printer Sharing is enabled on the NIC he's accessing through. Windows' built-in firewall has never gave me problems before, so I won't turn that off. As far as CMD is concerned, I've never tried that, but I guess that's something to try out in a little bit. Any other suggestions?

Actually, wouldn't it be \\pcname

The fun thing do would would be to either tell him your admin password or temporarily set it to something else and tell him, then have him do \\pcname\c$ in windows explorer to get to the root of your c drive. It will prompt him to input username and password and have him type \\pcname\administrator as the username and then the password and it will give him access. If he can get to there using the admin account, then there is a problem with the share that you've setup.

ok, I found the problem. I put up a folder to share on the network and tried to access through Network Places, and it says:

"\\BIGWORM\blah is not accessible. You might have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to fint out if you have access permissions.

The network path was not found."

Thing is, I've given permission dozens upon dozens of times, but to no avail. Anyone familiar with this? Thanks for any help.

try this: i had a different error initially before i got the one you getting. in my case after i set the permissions of folder sharing the second time and it worked, but try this.

make sure you have an enabled Guest account

Download the following and install it

Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit Tools
Download details: Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit Tools


install on the pc which is sharing the files (i.e ur pc)

after installation is complete, click on: Start, All Programs, Windows Resource Kit Tools, Command Shell

Then enter the following commands. (Attention: they are case sensitive.)

net user guest /active:yes

ntrights +r SeNetworkLogonRight -u Guest

ntrights -r SeDenyNetworkLogonRight -u Guest



The first command enables network access for Guest, the two subsequent ones change two different policies to allow network access for Guest.


after this i restarted my router and both my pcs (have a desktop and a laptop on a wifi)

after i did this the folders that had sharing set (on the pc i installed the application on) had lost their sharing satus. i simply reset the sharing permission to enable on all folders i wanted to be shared. it then worked. give it a try.

like i said it is pertaining to a different error but after i did it i got the error u getting, i then re - set the sharing permissions and it worked. good luck

Tell him to try and ping your computer. I've had issues on my network (mainly with Vista) where the machine doesn't resolve the computer name but using the IP directly works. Instead of \\PCNAME\ShareName try \\YourIP\ShareName. If it works, tell him to mount it as a network drive. : problemsolvedforever:
