League of Legends

Riot Games
League of Legends Home

WHAT IS THIS GAME

League of Legends is a free to play Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) game. It's very similar to Defense of the Ancients (some of the people who worked on DotA made the game) if you're familiar with that game. If you're not, the game has you control one champion in a team of 3-5 other champions with the goal being to destroy the other team's base. It's probably easier to watch some gameplay videos to get an idea of the gameplay.

I was completely unfamiliar with this genre before I started playing LoL and thought it was kind of boring, but it's actually really fun when playing with friends.

WHO CARES

I know a number of people on IRC who play regularly, and it would always be nice to get new people playing. The game recently launched the start of its first competitive season so there are plenty of new people who are signing up and learning how to play. New champions are currently being added to the game about once every 2-3 weeks, so there's always something new to try out.

OK COOL HOW DO I SIGN UP

Signup Link | Referral Link (if you're cool)

I can get some neat in-game rewards if you use the referral link and decide you like the game. Or you can just use the normal link if you don't want to give me stuff. That is also fine.

HELP

If you need help or if you're looking for people to talk to/play with, you can reach me or some of the other players I know in #rtfo @ irc.psigenix.net

Oh yeah we also have a TeamSpeak server that we use while playing. It helps.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

I'm going to be one of those people and just mention I prefer Heroes of Newerth over League of Legends, as its more in tune with how Dota is played. I've been in both beta's and that's just how I feel. However, if you guys are playing some LoL, I might join you from time to time.

Why is my ELO rating almost 1400 all I do is suck and die.

Also we need more noobs playing because that way I will look like less of a terrible noob.

Unless they're good off the bat in which case

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Did I mention League of Legends is free to play? Dohohoho.

I never played DotA so I can't really make good comparisons, though I understand LoL is a little more casual than HoN. That suits me just fine, though; I don't want to worry about KDA all the time.

I still can't quite get over the abbreviated LoL. I wonder if it's intentional.

THat said, I've played both HoN and dota when HoN was free, and this looks pretty interesting. But I'm not sure whether my region still gets free play -____-

I can't imagine why it wouldn't be free to play, but ymmv when it comes to getting a reasonable ping to servers.

The connection is pretty good, though. I'm pretty sure they're on the west coast of the US, and on the east coast I still get a <100 ping consistently.

Yes, LoL is free.. But when it comes to games like that, games that are skill based, in LoL's case, the guy with the bigger wallet wins. You could buy all the heroes, all the good runes, and just be more awesome then the guy who starts from scratch with nothing. The minute money enters the picture, it stops being a balanced game. Sure HoN is more 'serious' or what have you, but I also find it more enjoyable.

They might be doing a free weekend or offering buddy passes. If they do, I'll let you guys know.

erm Turbo, you can only buy champions with actual money the rest are just skins, runes you have to grind like everyone else to do it, so yeah some champions might be better than others and you buy those with money, but still the biggest wallet isn't the most likely to win, besides the game has a decent matchmaking wich tries to match the skill of players, honestly if you are good at the game a low level account can easily beat the one with all the runes and masteries unlocked.

You can buy all champions with in-game money. It's only skins that cost real money.

There's also a sizeable amount of free ones that rotate every week.

As far as I remember, there are two currencies in the game. Champions cost both, and runes did too at one point?

There are two currencies, Influence Points (IP) which are earned in-game, and Riot Points (RP) which are bought. Champions can be purchased with either IP or RP, but never both at the same time. Runes can only be purchased with IP, and cosmetic skins can only be purchased with RP.

Also, there's supposed to be a double IP weekend starting any minute now. Looks like all champions are available, too.

If anyone wants to add me, my summoner name is Damon Gant.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Double IP weekend is supposed to last until midnight Sunday (PDT) or so. They may end up extending it though, since their servers were acting up earlier in the day. The shop is still down until 12:30 AM PDT, so nobody can buy boosts.

There are technically some runes you can purchase with RP, but they are just basic ones that anyone can buy. The digital collectors pack (which has 20-something champions, some skins, and some bonus RP) has them as part of its bundle.

Riot's official stance is that they don't sell power, so I don't believe you'll ever see them selling special limited-edition runes or whatever that aren't also available for IP. The only true thing in this game is that the person with the bigger wallet has the snazzier-looking champs.

Also, my summoner name is Cow McTeats.

I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body?

Perfect timing. Heroes of Newerth has gone free to play for a week. Starting now, you can create an account for free and play without restrictions.

Really, Turbo?

Interest in this kind of game in this community is already low. Can't you just make a new thread if you really want people to play?

yeah Toku it is pretty elitist, they will expect everyone and anyone to know their champ perfectly, even if your account is level 1, but if you want to try it out we could go for some practice games and stuff, to see if you like the base game first and then see if it worth dealing with some assholes here and there. Since people are posting summoner names mine is a hard guess Juanzen.

All communities are elitist to some degree. If you're asking for a comparison between LoL and HoN's communities, my assumption is that LoL's is more forgiving due to its nature as a less hardcore game. LoL is designed to be more accessible, after all.

Of course, the only way to find out is to try it out yourself. You'll get your fair share of idiots as you gain levels, but I don't find the elitism obvious unless you're already high level or playing with smurfs.

Here are some streams of top-level play if anyone is interested in viewing it:
