changing of the seasons
So, it's late August. There's the merest cooling in the air, and some dead leaves get shaken from the trees in a downpour. The back to school sales are in full swing, but the best deals are already gone. Have you been feeling the change to autumn? Been craving different foods, looking at brown-palette clothing and chunky sweaters? Are you still in school, and too busy getting ready to go back to have sentimental thoughts about this time of year?
As for me, I've been having the craving to start working through a large pile of e-books I've acquired. Been thinking about cleaning out my closet, too, and donating some clothes to the good will. While the weather remains nice, I'm going to try to spend as much time as possible outside; winter lasts for approximately four years in my neck of the woods, so I better get as much sun and warmth as I can. Jam it back in, in the dark. |
I'm ready for fall, but it's not here. It is currently 29 degrees celcius (84F) at 9:30pm, and it still feels like 38C (100F) with humidity. It's a little bit ridiculous.
There's nowhere I can't reach. ![]() |
Can't WAIT for autumn actually. It'd be ABOUT TIME to turn off the darn AC. That thing is loud. Its doubly irritating when I'm not used to tuning it out when I'm trying to hear the film or vidya's finer parts in sound.
How ya doing, buddy? |
Well, today is the first day in Montreal that feels somewhat cold in a looooong time. It's rainy, and 18C out right now. I'm pretty sure it'll go back up shortly, as we usually don't start seeing fall in this city 'til late September at the earliest.
I actually wore a long sleeve shirt and jeans today for the first time in quite a while. I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? |
A few days ago the temperature here was over 100 degrees. Now it has been in the 60s. That is pretty much how fall arrives in Portland. It will probably get warm again, but not as much and certainly not for long. Some of the trees are already starting to lose their leaves. By the end of September the cloud cover will start to roll in, marking the beginning of autumn proper.
Today was lovely. High in the 60s, a strong fresh breeze with gentle sunshine and fluffy white clouds. I couldn't have asked for a prettier day. ![]() I was speaking idiomatically. |
The temperature here is supposed to finally be lowering to around 80 or so next week. Can't wait, since right now going outside is like walking into a sauna. Fuck the humidity.
I look more forward to the end of September, though--since that's the bad month for hurricanes. Here's hoping for another hurricane-free year... cause fuck-all if I wanna have to do all that packing and stressing. Most amazing jew boots |
I'm with Zinc. Fucking fuck the fucking humidity. It's been intermittently pissing it down over here because lol England, but it's not been cold at all. We've had hotter days back in June and July but at least it wasn't so clammy. Can't wait for the autumn to come and clear the air - it also means I can actually get some proper use out of that cardigan.

I feel so out of place in this thread.

Don't you love our 100°+ weather, shorty?
(And also the lack of an actual fall/winter.) There's nowhere I can't reach. |
Yes, I love our 85°F weather where my apartment is and being at the beach in the middle of August and sitting there freezing my butt off at 62°F in the marine layer. Thank you for reminding me. <3

Summer is but a short reprieve here in Vancouver.
I'm always ready for fall. I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? ![]() |
Oh, that's right. Screw you down in OC with a sea breeze.
![]() I was speaking idiomatically. |
Take your pick. Seriously, open invitation. ...and I live in SouthBay, not OC. What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? |
That sea breeze was fucking spectacular for riding.

It's been an oppressive summer out here in New England. Really dry, too. Which means awesome tomato crops HIGH FIVE >_> It also means great, great times out there in vacation land. Every weekend could be the best one of your life with this weather.
This past weekend cooled off substantially, though. The clouds came in and I had to actually wear a sweater for the first time in months. Today, it's about 63F and cloudy. I'm baking bread 'cause I can't think of anything else that productive to do. My garden is in limbo, still producing, but not growing as fast. The lawn only needs to be mowed maybe once every OTHER week, now. The leaves are starting to turn only VERY slightly, but if you're from the north, you can see fall is on its way, just from the yellow tipped trees. The peepers will be hauling in soon, which means that while the summer traffic is slowing down, the autumn traffic will only provide a very BRIEF relief for us locals. We were painting the house, but that's stale-mated until the sun comes back and the humidity clears out. (We've got half of it done, though) The camping season ends in about 2 weeks, maybe less. This is really upsetting for me, as I never like thinking of the campgrounds closing. We also scored a pop-up camped that is being worked on presently, but I want to break in this season, come hell or high water. I'm kind of mad at myself for not going more places and doing more things this summer. Every weekend came and went so fucking fast, and I don't feel like I have much to show for it, save for an improved house and some small mini-vacations. When Labor Day comes and goes, you know it's all over and you can break out the nutmeg and cinnamon. What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? |

I welcome fall with open arms. I am sick of being in excruciatingly hot weather all the time. Heck, I was actually hoping for a rainy summer. As a kid I'd never dream of doing that. However, I am going to hit up the Old Navy sale because they have $8 sweatshirts and it appears all my best fall fashions have gone missing.

We don't really have seasons here in the desert. It goes from unimaginably hot in the summer, to tolerably warm in the fall, to comfortably cool in the winter, to oh snap it's summer again in the spring.
Although it has been unreasonably humid like all this month. I don't really get it. I thought I left moisture far behind me in Houston. This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.
The fun has arrived! Wakka-wakka!

Well, at the very least you don't have to worry a lot about snow. I cannot stand the snow! But, I am choosing to live in a place where snow is an inevitability that comes with the changing of the seasons. Hopefully global warming will fix that problem.

This summer came by and went way too fast, but I for one am glad its over. I never really had much time to enjoy the summer. Its been I guess a kind of an average summer, back home you never really know what the weather is going to throw at you. The only problem with this summer is this fucking humidity. I finally managed to get a portable air conditioner for the bedroom so that at least I can sleep easier.
I for one am really excited for the fall; for me it is the best time of the year to do a lot of outdoor work. Nice cool 10 to 15 degree days, very easy to work outside in when you have a lot of hectic work. The new job is going great but its a little backbreaking but I am getting back in shape which is something I really needed. Most amazing jew boots ![]() |
I am excited for the fall too. Now that I have found steady employment I can enjoy going to graduate school full time and working part time. I mean, it will be a tax on my time but I won't be nearly as busy as I was at my old undergrad institution. I won't be joining fifty clubs this time around.

Well, the weather has finally started getting cooler! I am really excited that I don't have to waste the electricity to run my air conditioner anymore. Plus, it will still be a few months before I have to use the heater. How awesome!
