Eternity's Child - Morbid, Apocalyptic, Cartoony!? [Wii, DS]

Alten8 has agreed with Luc Bernard on the creation and publication of Nintendo DS and Wii versions of the Eternity's Child game , bringing this delightful creation to an even wider audience. Luc will be working closely with Alten8 to bring his creations to life on these formats

The story of Eternitys Child and the orphan 'Angel' - the planet on which Eternity's Child is set on. The planet was once filled with many living creatures and vast forests, however due to the pollution created by the habitants the icebergs melted and the whole planet was flooded and most of the creatures became extinct. The creatures without wings that were left became jealous of the ones with wings (that allowed them to survive the flooding), so the land creatures started murdering all the winged creatures until there was none left. To repopulate the world, many mechanical robots were created so that the world would not seem as empty as before, but most of those creatures got out of control and started attacking and destroying what was left.

Eternity's Child Wii version details -

Angel was left at the door of a orphanage when he was a baby, to protect him from being murdered his wings were cut off. The years went by as he stayed in that orphanage, not accepted by the other children and being often tortured and picked on. Angel then escapes from the orphanage to try to find any remaining creatures of his species and hoping to be accepted by them despite him not having his wings.

Details about Wii version -

* The entire game is hand drawn
* the animations are done traditionally by hand frame by frame (like old disney films)
* the soundtrack is all orchestral
* the game is an Interactive Fairytale
* there will be songs in the game like old disney films
* 2 player co operative mode will be available

DS version -

* the game will be a 3D platform game
* will not have the same story as the Wii version

Regular updates and information will appear on the Alten8 and the Eternitys Child web site.

About Luc Bernard

Luc Bernard is a young 21 year old artist/dark fairytale creator, he is currently working with Alten8 on the Wii and DS versions of Eternity's Child. Eternity's Child is planned to be turned into a animated series, toys, and various merchandise. For each one of his tales he takes inspiration from his life. Apart from Eternity's Child he is also working on various other dark fairytales such as The Rose Princess, Samuel, Manufactured Beauty. MySpace.com - www.myspace.com/114230076
The premise itself sounds very intriguing, if only for the story, although the interactive fairytale part will hopefully be more than mere point and click/choose your own path. I'm also rather curious as to how 2 player coop would work. I think it's rather fresh to have a morbid story once in a while and see how it plays out. I get a sort of Gashlycrumb Tinies vibe from it too. Definitely a game of interest for me when both versions come out.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

Yeah, I'm hoping for more details on the gameplay also. If it is an adventure game, then the story at least sounds interesting. I'm sure this will be cataloged in the "games as art" list sooner or later.

So they moved this project from a XBL download to the Wii? So yet another hand drawn 2D game that would have looked stunning at 720p is being dropped down to 480p? Sigh.....

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Wow, if you're really dissapointed in 480p, fix it yourself. Jesus christ, this flamming has gotten horrible.

I can't wait to play this game. I liked what I've seen so far, anyway.

Better 480p than dropped altogether because of XBL size restrictions. Although honestly if it were that big they could have got it published for 360 but perhaps they figured it wasn't the right audience.

I hope this turns out to be awesome and that the songs don't suck because that could really ruin it.

How ya doing, buddy?

That looks really cute, and I found myself staring and these screens far longer than I should've. This has definitely got me hoping for some gameplay videos soon enough to see this in motion.

What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now?

You have serious issues my friend!

Hahahaha, I skipped over it before, but it reads like a fanfic written by a 15-year old! I guess Luc's not out of his angsty "misunderstood artist" phase yet.

The game looks pretty cool, though. I like the style, and yeah if it looks good in motion I'll be sold. Cause who needs gameplay! Also, is it just me or does this whole thing reek of incredible pretentiousness? I mean:
Quote:
* the game is an Interactive Fairytale
I know they're trying to describing the game's good qualities, but an Interactive Fairytale?! And why are they patting themselves on the back for an orchestral soundtrack?

What, you don't want my bikini-clad body?

BWOOP BWOOP, NEOGAF POST ON GAMINGFORCE!

Oh hey there's a gameplay video here. I'm all for 2D platformers, but this just seems pretty off so far. Like a flash game or something. :] Maybe it's his weird jumping animation. Maybe it's. Maybe. Something. Maybe.

I dunno, neither 480p nor 720p make the game look stunning. Maybe it just doesn't look all that stunning to begin with. =(

Oh I see, it's not legitimate complaint that upscaled 480p looking horrible compared to native HD on any HDTV? When did gamers become so accepting of inferior products?

Rather than work with Microsoft on the XBL Market Place limitations like other developers have done this company decided to just cut some of the games assets and put it on a less demanding piece of hardware. I can't believe anyone here can't see the long-term issue with this type of developer activity.

Rock: It would help if you had a clean 720p source to compare it with.

Oh god, static images with tweens and shit. This is a fucking flash game in terms of animation. I dig the painted look but good god would it kill him to give some life to it? And wow the jumping animation reminds me of the retarded shit my friend and I used to make back in the day using The Games Factory. ='D

Also, Cetra, go eat a dick. Bye! =DDD

Aside from being a little floaty and the main character looking like a retard, this actually looks like it could have potential. I'm all for "Modern" 2D platformers. Music's not too bad either.

Judging from the gameplay footage, the hammer the protagonist uses looks like it has very limited range considering how punishing the game is for colliding with an enemy. The character is only bumped back a tiny bit, and there appears to be no invincibility time after the collision.

This looks to me like a very early build. Although I don't know when this game will launch, it really shows a lot of the symptoms that I see on early builds whenever I work on projects (and that's the reason why most companies don't show them, too!). The animation frames are not done yet, there's clear gameplay issues... There aren't even any sound effects it seems. Although I'm not saying this game will be good (I'm pretty skeptical in fact), I'd say that this video might not be representative of the final product. At least it shouldn't be, cause it looks bloody awful!

I don't like the music much, it sounds hackneyed to me. Cheap cliché Elfman ripoff that's in lots of kids shows and stuff, I don't really need it. I don't think it fits the tone of the level either. But maybe this song doesn't actually go with this level, it could be the theme song for all I know.

What, you don't want my bikini-clad body?

I love the concept, but wow. Call me when there's some footage of a later build to see. That game is way too early in development to be showing more than just screenshots.

Also lol at the wingfic.

Heh, the idea does sound a bit fanficy... But its visually captivating to me.

Also, if you guys thought this is angsty, wait till you read "The Rose Princess". Its so f-ing twisted.

Indie Games: Luc Bernard's The Rose Princess - Kotaku

Quote:
Luc Bernard is the mind behind the interactive fairy tail Eternity's Child, which is heading to the Wii and DS. After reading the story I posted yesterday, Bernard contacted Kotaku to offer up some exclusive details on another game he has in the works, The Rose Princess. At its heart, The Rose Princess is a story about a cello player and her rabbit, which seems cute and harmless enough, but then the details start coming. The cellist in question is found one day by said rabbit, lying amidst a field of dead roses (yes roses grow on bushes, but it's a different world than we live in). The girl is cursed so that everything she touches dies. Luckily her newfound friend isn't quite a living thing. No, Mr. Cuddles is a failed entertainer machine...a mechanical bunny created to sing and dance who can do neither. Before I continue, let me warn you that Mr. Cuddles is about to get a lot less cute.

Being a failed mechanical creature, Mr. Cuddles was throw out with the trash, after which he turned to cross-dressing and prostitution to make money for a place to live and to support his growing alcohol and drug dependency. Yeah, it's getting a bit deep.

So the drug-addicted, alcoholic, cross-dressing prostitute mechanical rabbit meets the cello player who can kill with a touch, and together they go on a journey to find acceptance in a world that doesn't want them or fears them.

The Rose Princess herself is inspired by Megan McCauley, a singer/songwriter from Cleveland Ohio whose work includes songs on both the Fantastic Four and Elektra Soundtracks. If you hop to her MySpace you'll immediately see the resemblance. Bernard calls McCauley his "artistic muse", and is hoping to get her to lend her voice to the main character in the game.

Bernard calls The Rose Princess a "Glam Action RPG", and considers it to be his chef d'oeuvre - his masterpiece. Unlike Eternity's Child, the game will be entirely 3D with a completely cello-based soundtrack. He hopes to release it in episodic format, and while no platform has been chosen yet for the game he is very interested in the PlayStation Network.

Below you'll find some concept art for the game featuring the titular Rose Princess and her bunny companion. It's a pretty avant-garde concept for the video game industry, but perhaps that's exactly what we need to generate something fresh and new in a business that tends to feed on itself a bit too much.
The bold part got me laughing so hard. Best twisted sick character ever?

There's nowhere I can't reach.

Boy oh boy... This kid seriously needs to humble down. "Chef d'oeuvre", indeed. Leave it to the French to introduce a pretentious designer in the games industry, we didn't have one of those yet. I bet he goes around saying "I'm a genius! A GENIUS!!"

Actually he's from the UK... :P So its more like "leave it to the pompous Brits"...

I still say Mr. Cuddles is one of the most insane and coolest ideas I've seen in games recently. But to each their own. Maybe we should actually learn more or at least have a demo before we judge the pretensiousness of the developer though... Aside from the two Kotaku posts, we know nothing about him or his other works.

BRIT!? But... He's called Luc Bennard!... LUC!... BEN..AR.....

MY WORLD IS CRUMBLING!!!!...

Anyway, from everything that's been posted here, I can't shake the feeling that I got. I mean seriously, who makes his masterpiece at age 21? Buuut at the same time, I was initially somewhat intruiged by the whole thing, so I'll keep an eye on it. In a way, having a tempered expectation helps in judging the game on its merits.

Either way, I sure do hope the game turns out good, because there's a very fragile revival of 2D games going on right now. I feel like a number of bad, high budget 2D games might blow that whole renaissance thing out of the water!

I was speaking idiomatically.
