Thread once again made on orion_mk3's behalf. Hopefully he'll be back in full capacity soon! =O

Also, I had my next three nominations planned prior to the BSC break, but lately I've been feeling the groove bias something fierce. So, instead of starting the block of my best nominations ever, past, present, and future, I'm going to bump everything back a cycle and nominate some Touhou-arrange technoshitz. Sorry for the inconvenience.
  • Artist: Hyakutarou Tsukumo
  • Composer: ZUN
  • Album/Game Title: WindAge
  • Track Title: Oriental Dark Flight
  • Disc Number: 1 (of 1)
  • Track Number: 15
  • Catalog Number: FNAG-0005
  • Year: 2006
  • Additional Information: Tsukumo is a Technosoft rockmaster (in fact, he composed one of the tracks featured this week, Cyber Cave), so this is eligible under Article 2 of the Confederation.
  • Source(s): http://www.factory-noise-ag.com/disc_06WA.html

Further, Dragon God gave me a nomination last week, but I forgot to post it.

Ok, last week was iffy, but now I realize why everyone loves this so much. I'm not even going to vote for my nom.

(2 Points) - 3rd GIG #Crescent - In Search of the Holy Sword -Seiken Densetsu-
(2 Points) - Lost Technology ~ Thunder Force Sound Track - Cyber Cave
(2 Points) - FireFly Studios' Stronghold (PC Game Rip) - Under An Old Tree

I feel uncultured because I haven't heard most of this stuff before. Still, I hope mine is good enough to garner at least one point. (Probably not)

There's nowhere I can't reach.

Yea, the best thing about this contest is the obscure music you run into. Last week, I didn't like any of the songs though, so I didn't even bother voting. Anyway my votes for this week to come later.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Isn't the whole point of something like this to be exposed to stuff you otherwise never would have discovered?

While talking with Crash Landon a week or two ago (maybe longer, I dunno), I found out by looking at past nominations that this has already been nominated. I assume no one said anything because it was so long ago that they didn't recall the song (Week 9, before my time).

Of course, since it didn't place, there's nothing stopping you from renominating it. Just thought you might want to know.

I, for one, feel that there should be a firm policy on the issue of renominations. Right now, it's far too ambiguous and people are unknowingly choosing tracks that once failed to place.

Yeah, I agree. Perhaps allow a track to be nominated again just once, and after that, it's not allowed anymore?

but discourage that

I'm having trouble deciding on my next nom. It's either going to be a simple, feel-good song or a darker but possibly more interesting song. Hmm...I guess it's not a big deal, since I'll be able to nominate both of them eventually.

We could always put a list up of already nominated tracks on the wiki somewhere.

If I may say so, I think this is a sound course of action. And perhaps set a time period that must elapse before the track is eligible for re-nomination (at least several months).

If it's allowable, I'd like to stand by my (re)nomination this time.

And to throw out some votes while I'm at it:

Wow. When I nominated Cyber Cave, I wasn't sure if the info was even correct, because I honestly couldn't find anything else by Hyakutarou Tsukumo. But apparently there is more, and I will have to check this out.

I'll vote later, maybe in a day or two when I have a chance to listen through everything. Also, I think seven more new people should come along with nominations, just to bump Crash up yet another week.

Really? You'll make Dragon God cry.

Check out Technosoft Game Music Collection Vols. 6 (Hyper Duel OST), 7 (Blast Wind), 8 (Reverthion and Steeldom), and 9 (Neorude) for more. The album I nominated from is probably not a good choice to check out, since he only did two tracks on it.

2 points - 3rd GIG #Crescent - I think my very first SotW nom was Holders of Power from Ys Book 1&2. This song reminds me of that in that its a great rockin remix of an excellent song.

2 points - Zero Wing - I'll spare everyone the standard Zero Wing joke, but this is a good shooter tune that doesn't wind up sounding generic. Just a high quality chiptune.

2 points - Riviera - Almost sounds like giant robot anime music at times, but that's ok, because it's very likeable.

Nothing leapt out at me as a clear favorite this week, which is sometimes good, as it indicates a potentially close race.

3rd GIG #Crescent - Quite a good track, really. It's no surprise, however, as it's a MintJam offering and that almost always means quality. So, there's no "WHOA" factor, as I expected it to be solid.. (I first heard the track a couple weeks ago when CHz asked me what I thought, which is when these opinions were formed.) Quite a lot of noodling, and that's bound to upset the chagrin of a few usual SotW participants, but I don't mind the shredding when it's flavorful and backed by equally aggressive elements. Lotsa rockin' goodness here.

Anno 1602 - A nice changeup after the MintJam track, Dreamer has a lot of character. Although it teeters on the edge of "militant march", it's not so generic that I'm bored. It's a simple, yet effective piece. However, it's also the sort of "consistent" quality that tends to be easily overshadowed by more exotic nominations.

Blaster Master Original Sound Tracks - And back to rockin'! But it goes in a slightly different direction than the MintJam track. A few of the notes seem to be stretched out for no reason other than to show off, but eh, what the hell? The whole of "Rush Boy" isn't quite as memorable as "In Search~", but I liked the showmanship this track possessed, just the same.

Firefly Studios' Stronghold - I appreciate the reflective, sparse nature of this track, but I'm a person who gravitates toward full, layered effects. "Under An Old Tree" is very serene, definitely, but it feels a little mundane. Changing it would ruin the whole effect, so I'd leave this track untouched. It just doesn't excite me because it's not meant to; I think that's the roadblock I'm hitting. I prefer energy over introspection, in my music.

Loaded - Some nice synth grooves going on here. Kinda murky and mysterious, but in a way that's quite welcome. I'm a big fan of digi-blips when used with care and they fit in wonderfully with the progressive ambience. Throw in some sweeps, drone pads and a pulsing bass, and I'm your friend. I don't believe everyone here will dig this track, but I think it's pretty cool.

Lost Technology ~ Thunder Force Sound Track - This one's vaguely reminiscient of a lot of the stuff from "Jets 'N' Guns", only not quite as moving. Cyber Cave tries to do a lot, and it used a lot of the right tools, and even some of the proper methods, but it still comes up feeling somewhat overworked. There were sections in which I would've liked individual elements to have more presence; pieces felt "piled on". Not a bad track, but it needs less of...something.

Riviera - I've heard this soundtrack before and my impressions were fairly neutral. It's not god-awful but it doesn't make me sit up either. "The Angels Foretell~" is probably the best track from the album, though. Still, it's not as impressive as other choices this week.

Zero Wing - Chiptune lovin'. And boy, can you tell it was on the Genesis? The samples make the fact a clear giveaway. As chiptunes go, it's workable. I'm a very tough critic on chiptunes, though, since the really good ones are amazing and all others tend to become perceived as imitators. "New Day for Me" is still quite good, and doubly so for being from the Genesis, but it didn't blaze any new territory when it was composed. But that's just me nitpicking. To most people, this tune should be pretty kickass.

Victory Lane

2 Points:
Loaded (Red Book Audio) - Track 6
2 Points: 3rd GIG #Crescent - In Search of the Holy Sword -Seiken Densetsu-
1 Point: Anno 1602 (Game Rip) - Dreamer
1 Point: Zero Wing (Sega Genesis Game Rip) - New Day for Me (Stage 2: Legrous)

A wide point spread for me this week, which means there was a lot of nice stuff. Seemed to be a ROCKIN' week, definitely. The "Blaster Master" track would've gotten a point too if I had one to spare.

Good choices, folks.

Wow, well met this week, sirs.

3rd GIG #Crescent - In Search of the Holy Sword -Seiken Densetsu-

This track lands itself square in the middle between standout and standard. I'm not detecting much originality in its form, sounds or ideas, but what MintJam's doing here, it does right. An almost great track.

Anno 1602 (Game Rip) - Dreamer

Dreamer, while failing to do anything flashy or ambitious, is slightly captivating and very pretty. Not particularly as moving as I assume it aims to be.

Blaster Master Original Sound Tracks - Rush Boy -Theme from Roddy-

A bit of fun but without any substantial qualities to appreciate. The accompaniment feels lax. The lead melody is what Rush Boy has going for it. It entertains but doesn't floor.

FireFly Studios' Stronghold (PC Game Rip) - Under An Old Tree

Oooh, those soft drums and wandering strings. My bias track of the week for sure, I'm falling for the sound, I'm defenseless against it. It feels fairly generic otherwise, but <3 the serenity and flow.

Loaded (Red Book Audio) - Track 6

I really like how this is layered and how it progresses. It's got style and groove nothing else in the group touches.

Lost Technology ~ Thunder Force Sound Track - Cyber Cave

The only meh selection of the week for me. Certain sound selections are a little off putting, namely the sort of echo effect in the melodic center of it, would it be the hook or what? (the section starting at 1:13)

Riviera ~The Promised Land~ Full Arrange Soundtrack - The Angels Foretell Their Demise

Slightly too brief to reward this above some of the other choices of the week, but what is there in this short burst of a song kicked my ass.

Zero Wing (Sega Genesis Game Rip) - New Day for Me (Stage 2: Legrous)

I hate it when the tail end of the week ends up being noteworthy. Throws a wrench in my likely point spread. New Day is solid and feels like a complete whole more than most of what's here. The melody is consistent instead of relying on a single impressive passage and everything really gels.

It was hard cutting some of these out of points.

2 points - 3rd GIG #Crescent - In Search of the Holy Sword -Seiken Densetsu-
2 points - FireFly Studios' Stronghold (PC Game Rip) - Under An Old Tree
1 point - Zero Wing (Sega Genesis Game Rip) - New Day for Me (Stage 2: Legrous)
1 point - Anno 1602 (Game Rip) - Dreamer

How ya doing, buddy?

Very quick votes here; comments later.

EDIT: Pretty cool week. A lot of surprises, Zero Wing being one of the biggest ones for me; it's a really good chip tune.

(3 points) 3rd GIG #Crescent - In Search of the Holy Sword -Seiken Densetsu-
Well, this is Mintjam, after so wuality is more or less expected. And this one doen't disappoint at all. Very nicely crafted and easily my top pick this week.

(2 points) Riviera ~The Promised Land~ Full Arrange Soundtrack - The Angels Foretell Their Demise
I heard Riviera's music was pretty good. And if the rest of the soundtrack is as good as "Angels," I'm sold.

(1 point) Zero Wing (Sega Genesis Game Rip) - New Day for Me (Stage 2 Legrous)
One of the better chip tunes I've heard so far. Quality all around.

Jam it back in, in the dark.
I think therefore I am... I think.
