Juicin' with Acer: oh this isn't horrible
:collards:
So yesterday's experiment was interesting. I must have woken up at like 4 AM and couldn't get back to sleep. I seem to be doing that a lot on my work days. I kind of just lied there trying to get some sleep but six rolled around and I hadn't managed it. I'll definitely be tired later.

Around that time I went downstairs, gathered my supplies to make carrot limeade juice (see two entries ago).

The resulting juice was pretty good. I poured a cup of almond milk and chunked a frozen banana in the blender and put a bunch in to make a nice smoothie out of it.

Then running a bit behind time I made up a batch of mean green and poured it into a mason jar. Had that and a salad for lunch at work.

It's an acquired taste. It's not bad but it's not super pleasant either. I just hope that in time I can chug it down as easily as I did today's breakfast.

Pretty sure if I make another batch of mean green I'll probably have a hoagie with it. I know that kind of defeats the purpose but it's said you're supposed to ease yourself into this and well I'm kind of jump kicking that easing process a lot already.

I found a neat website last night where this guy around my age details every meal he had while doing his 60-day juice fast.

I'll probably copy his format and probably his menu a bit. Basically he did the mean green for lunch and dinner for the most part while switching up breakfast a bit. Essentially it seems like breakfast is the meal to look forward to the most flavor-wise. Sometimes he switched the kale for parsley which is good because I got a bunch of that.

There are a few recipes that call for beets and I think I might like to try out this V28 and gazpacho recipes sometime so I don't have to have mean green all the time.

I kind of wish people would use the journals more. It's kinda buh having three entries in the list.

Juicin' with Acer: Bitter Bitter Juice
rangesoda:
So how about that juicin' entry I made like a day or so ago. Let's actually juice! My boss gave me these odd ingredients and said it was good for clearing out your system and stuff. No idea - I really hope I'm not rocketing to a toilet in an hour.

Here's my juicer:

Here's my juicer with all its pieces separated:

This here is a calabash which sometimes goes by Korean squash or ghia. Basically I imagine it acts like a cucumber would in this thing supplying a good amount of the juice. I used an orange in my first batch so there's one next to it for size reference.

These are bitter melons. They are pretty damn bitter and part of what make this taste so woah. It's very in your face.

And this is of course ginger. You'll be overly familiar with ginger if you drink juice as it's practically in everything. Pretty much you are free to shove ginger, lemon, and lime in anything you want. Anyway, only use so much or it'll overpower the drink. On my first batch I definitely used a thumb's worth and it was too much for this particular recipe.

Here's all that stuff cut up so it could be put in the juicer easily.

Bitter Bitter Juice
==================================
Ingredients:
1 calabash
2 bitter melon
1 inch piece of ginger (1 thumb) (or half depending on your taste)
1 peeled orange or 1 apple (I recommend apple)

Directions:
1. Wash all produce well
2. Juice
3. Enjoy?
==================================

Yeah, so I used an orange the first time and 1 thumb's worth of ginger. That was quite a kicker in that it was eh not all that great. Pretty bitter. I still drank it down though. I'm not doing that recipe again.

So I had another set of the ingredients. Second batch I used half a thumb of ginger and an apple instead of an orange. That definitely cut the bitter flavor down and made it more tolerable. I had enough juice already though so I stored it in the mason jar you see above.

I took some body measurements in the afternoon and some profile shots. If you think I should post them let me know. I know I should really do it in the morning but eh they're something.

Juicin' with Acer: also shoppin' and other crap
:collards:
Alright so I'm giving this whole green juice fast thing a go through. Got me a nice juicer for $150 (Breville JE98XL Juice Fountain Plus 850-Watt Juice Extractor).

Today I went and got ingredients.

Code:
Global Food
============================================
Juicy Orange Bag 4L                     2.99
American Cucumber      6 @ 0.99         5.94
Ginger           0.75 lb @ 0.99 /lb     0.74
Red Pepper       0.75 lb @ 1.69 /lb     1.27
Green Kale       1.10 lb @ 0.79 /lb     0.87
Green Kale       1.75 lb @ 0.79 /lb     1.38
Parsley                2 @ 2/0.99       0.99
============================================
Total: $14.18

They also had lemons 3 @ 0.99 and limes 5 @ 0.99 which would
have saved me later.
10 limes = 1.98
12 lemons = 3.96

Sam's Club
============================================
Almond Milk 3pack                       7.98
Fuji Apples x11                         6.98
Limes       x11                         2.98
Lemons      x11                         4.97
Celery      3 stalks                    2.48
Celery      3 stalks                    2.48
Carrots     a lot                       2.98
============================================
Total: $30.85

The almond milk can be used (1 cup) with a frozen banana to
basically make any smoothie out of these juices. It'll last a while.
Probably.

Giant
============================================
Mint                3/4 oz package      1.99
Mint                3/4 oz package      1.99
Granny Smith Apples x11                 4.99
============================================
Total: $8.97

I'm not particularly fond of the mint cost and might find a better
price at Wegman's. Also I might check prices for Granny Smith
and Fuji apples at Global Food.

Global Food: 14.18
 Sam's Club: 30.85
      Giant:  8.97
==================
Grand Total: $54

If I switched getting limes and lemons at Global Food and take
the almond milk out of the price it might show what a regular trip
would cost.

Global Food: 20.12
 Sam's Club: 14.92
      Giant:  8.97
==================
Grand Total: $44.01

with the almond milk: $50.99
So I haven't actually made any juice yet so I have no idea how much this will get me by. Maybe it'll last a week. Maybe it won't. Also perhaps I'd get some better prices for some things at Wegman's or buying apples at Global Food might make the price better too.

I spent like I dunno an hour washing/cleaning all these fruits and vegetables minus one package of celery. Let's see how well this works.

Oh yeah let's type up some recipes.

Mean Green Juice
==================================
Ingredients:
1 cucumber
4 celery stalks
2 apples
6-8 leaves kale
1/2 lemon
1 tbsp ginger (1 thumb)

Directions:
1. Wash all produce well
2. Peel lemon (optional)
3. Juice
4. Pour over ice
5. Enjoy
==================================

Sunburst Juice
==================================
Ingredients:
1 orange
1 red bell pepper
3 carrots
1/2 lemon

Directions:
1. Peel orange
2. Peel lemon (optional)
3. Wash red pepper. Remove seeds and stem.
3. Wash carrots
4. Juice
5. Pour over ice
6. Enjoy
==================================

Carrot Limeade Juice
==================================
Ingredients:
6 carrots
1 cucumber
2 apples
1 inch piece of ginger (1 thumb)
1/2 cup of fresh mint
1/2 lime

Directions:
1. Wash all produce well
2. Juice your carrots first
3. Peel your cucumber and feed it to your juicer
4. Add your apples, mint, lime, and ginger together
5. Enjoy
==================================

I have no idea how much these will yield. I'll have to figure that out. I'm going to be using the Granny Smith apples for the Mean Green Juice. The Fujis will be for the others.

If you'd like to know more about this whole juicing thing I'd recommend watching the documentary Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead. You can watch it for free on hulu or stream it on netflix. You can also find it fairly easy on ye olde torrent site if you don't have netflix or don't feel like watching ads on hulu.

I got interested in it because Tim Schafer (fine maker of adventure games) has been doing it for about a month now and lost 25 lbs. He talks about it on a thread on Double Fine's forums and it's pretty neat. I then watched the documentary he watched (FS&ND) and thought hey if it's good enough for Tim sounds good enough for me.

So yeah, I'll probably take some pictures of the juicing process, make some measurements of myself, and take some before pictures in future entries. Let's see how this thing works!
