GRAVENSTEEN CASTLE (look here if you like weapons and torture stuff)
Response to: SAINT BAVO CATHEDRAL by Freelance

GRAVENSTEEN

The Gravensteen is a castle in Ghent originating from the Middle Ages. The name means "castle of the count" in Dutch.

Apparently the castle was used originally as a courthouse, a prison and then a factory. Inside the castle is a museum dedicated to weapons and instruments of torture.

Spoiler:

The Session room.

The wall walk was defended by 24 protruding towers with loopholes and battlements with towers. The towers could be divided in 2 levels by a horizontal wooden floor.

The Sugar Drawer was originally meant to be a chapel for the count.

WEAPONS AND ARMOUR

Those crossbows are huge.

TORTURE DEVICES

Spoiler:

The guillotine. Ironically it was named after doctor Joseph-Ignace Guillotin, a man who opposed capital punishment.

This doohickey was wrapped around the neck of the victim. The collar was fastened diagonally to the walls so when the victim moved even the slightest, the pin will pierce the flesh.

Thumbscrews.

A straitjacket.

Before the 18th century, people were not condemned to months or years of imprisonment. Pending the decision of the judge, suspects were held in custody with a chain round their neck, hands and/or feet, sometimes wearing a pressure belt.

Spoiler:

By means of a red hot key, later a red searing iron an indelible sign was branded on the criminal's shoulder, back or cheek. This branding procedure was carried out in public.

The Rasphuis, or Central Prison could house 1500 convicts.

Tomorrow it's back to Brussels for the last leg of the trip.
