Microsoft Update Issues

So, I've got my PC set up to where if it needs to do update installations, it'll do that while shutting down.

Lately, the "Install Updates and Shut Down" process has been taking over 10+ hours lately.

I tried doing my updates today and this error message came up:
"Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 and .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 Security Update for Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003, and Windows XP x86 (KB979909)
Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 SP1 Security Update for Windows 2000 and Windows XP (KB979906)"

Does anyone know what is causing the issue, and if it is harmful to my computer?

Jam it back in, in the dark.

.NET Framework is extra program extensions made my Microsoft. There are some programs and games out there that do make use of that. You technically don't need it installed, but you might as well, anyways.

I would try and redo your updates again and see if that makes a difference. I work in a computer repair shop and see this sort of thing happen, especially with those two updates.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

How does Windows Update behave when you run it manually (ie, from the Microsoft website)? Does the problem recur?

If it does, it's possible your system was messed up somehow. I have had instances when Windows Update screwed up my computer, though not with the .NET framework. System Restore usually takes care of things, provided you still have the restore point.

If you don't, then I suppose you'll either have to grin and bear it, or reinstall the operating system. Arguably a bit drastic though.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Thanks guys. Well this puppy's been long overdue for re-formatting anyways, I guess it's time to just buy new RAM and upgrade to the heftier computer I have sitting and collecting dust.

I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body?

Couldn't you just install them manually? Or tell windows to notify you of updates and pick what you want?
