You got it, it's the last season of the show, Sailor Stars. These two screencaps are taken from the final episode (ep 200). As Sailor Moon is in that condition for just about half the episode, you can imagine why it wasn't picked up in America

I looked through the list of anime that aired in 2001 in both AniDB and Wikipedia, looking specifically at fantasy and history genres.
