I am not sure if you guys discussed this or not, but to you prefer your metal music with clean or aggressive screaming vocals?

For myself, I prefer clean vocals- I can get into the music much easier and all around I think it sounds better. I do listen to bands with aggressive vocals also, such as In Flames and Soilwork and wow, thats about it. I never find myself in the mood to listen to those bands much though because I am rarely in an aggressive mood.

What do you guys prefer?

There's nowhere I can't reach.

I'm neutral. I probably listen to more metal with aggressive vocals than clean, but I wouldn't say I enjoy those vocals more.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

I like them both. I tend to enjoy when the vocalist utilizes a variety of styles, though.

I like it all. It doesn't matter to me. However I do prefer the deep gutteral growls over screams. They just sound more powerful and darker than screaming.

I prefer clean vocals, but some rough death/gutteral vocals are okay ever so often. However, I'm not terribly fond of screaming constantly through a song, or a string of songs that have those kinds of vocals. It's just not my thing.

I enjoy Slayer. Definitely enjoy their older material, though they have some OK songs on their newer stuff.

I got the new All That Remains CD and their first one. I really enjoy their first CD, not too much metalcore there however the new one is very solid. Nothing mindblowing and if you enjoy good metalcore, you would enjoy it. Otherwise it won't change your mind.

Slayer sucks.

Though, surprisingly I don't mind All That Remains. I bought their first album on a whim when it first came out and actually kinda liked it. They can actually write a pretty good song, with is pleasing to know, since so many metalcore bands fail at something so basic. Besides them and Darkest Hour, metalcore is very bleak and I'm "glad" to see it's being replaced.

Actually, scratch that. Technical metalcore is quite possibly the worst genre to ever exist.

Most of my music consists of harsh vocals. Mainly because I'm very picky when it comes to clean vocals. But, I'm quite happy with either. I guess it all depends on the music and what's more fitting. Mood also plays a big part.

I like either, but I can't stand screaming at all. There are only a few screaming bands that I can actually stand, and far less that I like.

Gutteral death growls are amazing, and I really like that in my music. I also like really clear vocals, but my favorites come when those styles are mixed.

Listen to Haggard to see what I mean .

Screaming is good sometimes... In small quantities. A good example would be the Frameshift song "I Killed You".

So I just downloaded a Butterfly Temple discography. They remind me of a doomier, heavier Falkenbach - I'm loving their stuff right now. Anyone else into 'em?

Despite the complete turd they have turned into, the first five Slayer albums are absolutely quintessential thrash. I didn't go see them, though. Too expensive, too many crappy bands, and it was at the Bell Centre which means I have to pay more if I want a good place - too much trouble. They suck now anyway, I didn't want to hear them butcher classics or endure crap from God Hates Us All.

What a strange question... Why would you like metal music if you don't like aggressive music? You can't separate the aggression from the metal.

For me, I have no preference. It depends entirely on the band. Most very melodic metal bands should stick to clean vocals, growls don't fit (there are some exceptions where it works, though). But extreme metal works so much more when it's accompanied with kick-ass growls. I can't imagine Morbid Angel without growls, it would sound stupid.

Most of the time I prefer bands with "non-clean" vocals, be it growls or black metal-esque screams. But, in the end it depends on the band and the genre of music they play. As Morrigan mentioned, some bands would sound stupid with different vocal styles.

Woohoo, just got my Angel Witch s/t (25th anniversary edition) CD in the mail. Time for some classic NWOBHM.

Speaking of which, any NWOBHM fans here? I'm not a huge connoisseur, but when I'm in the mood I love to play some old Legend, Cloven Hoof, Angel Witch, Witchfinder General or Tokyo Blade... or hell, even the classic Def Leppard debut.

There are a few NWOBHM acts I'm really into. As you mentioned, Angel Witch's debut remains a classic, and I still listen to the two Witchfinder General albums, but I can't get into a lot of stuff from the era. Def Leppard and Tokyo Blade just don't appeal to me, and Cloven Hoof reminds me too much of Manowar.

Lately, i've been listening to alot of Venom. What does everyone think of their albums " Welcome to Hell " and " Black Metal"? Personally, i find them to be brilliant and fun albums, that unfortunately is taken far to seriously by judeo-christian groups.

Venom's new album makes me want to break things. The vocals are hooooorrible.

I've lately been hooked on a Twilightning song ("Plague-House Puppet Show"), and I'm finding it fucking hard to find any of their stuff anywhere. It's cheesy as hell, and really damn rockable.

How ya doing, buddy?

Those would both be in my top ten metal albums of the 1980's.

I love aggressive music, I just don't like aggressive vocals. A lot of the time, it just ruins the music for me.

Rather than that though, I have recently been listening to a band called Vanden Plas. You guys have probably heard of them, but so far I have enjoyed a lot of their music. I wrote a short review of their newest cd on this site. If you like Dream Theater you might enjoy these guys Vanden Plas Myspace Music Page

I got it all, so I can send you some if you can't find it.

As for Venom, I liked them when I was... fourteen? They're garbage, fun, but garbage. I can't listen to a full album without turning it off after the first few songs, but they're good if I'm playing my music on shuffle. I mean, I appreciate what they did for genres like black metal, but I'm not going to 'gasm over them just because of that. Plus, they should have stopped making music a long time ago. I was surprised to hear that "Metal Black" was actually worse than some of their older stuff. But oh well.

So, Gigantour just announced their lineup for 2006. Megadeth, Lamb of God, Opeth, Over Kill, Arch Enemy, Into Eternity, and a couple of others I haven't heard of.

Goddamn, I want to go to this, but there's no Texas dates scheduled yet. I'm actually considering a 13 hour road trip to New Mexico for this shit. Problem is I know none of my friends would want to go with me.

Gigantour sucks this year. Opeth is the only good band on the bill, with Sanctity and Into Eternity being somewhat decent. Arch Enemy is fine, but I've seen them before and their shows are lame. I guess it's just a really disappointing tour, especially when I had high hopes for it.

There's nowhere I can't reach.
