Brand of RAM on Laptop
Is there a way to find out what brand of RAM I have in my laptop without opening it up? I have a Dell Inspiron E1705 laptop with Vista if that helps.
Jam it back in, in the dark. |
If you bought it from Dell, I'd assume that it's 'Dell' RAM, if there is such a thing. If there isn't, I'd just check out their website [FAQs, maybe?] and see if they say what the brand is.
There's nowhere I can't reach. |
SiSoft Sandra might be able to tell you that.
Checking RAM is pretty easy on a laptop, though. It's usually just a screw or two that should take about three minutes to take off, look, and put back on. This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
You have to literally remove the battery from the laptop, and take the RAM out of the bottom of the laptop in order to find out. There are usually more than one bay so you'll have to look. Take the RAM out and read the sticker and write everything down. (ex: PC3200ddr2 blahblah) Normally, you have to purchase the RAM from the vendor...which Dell will just charges an obscene amount for.
I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? |
No you don't. I bought more RAM for my laptop once off of Newegg, and another time it was just a generic piece I bought from someone at my school (they had a different brand of laptop, as well). You just have to be sure to buy the right kind.
I was speaking idiomatically. |
No, no...you CAN buy RAM from somebody else, but sometimes you have to order it directly from the manufacturer. My prime example is my personal experience sitting on my desk at home. I have a Sony Vaio (god if I remember the model) which has 512 and I wanted to boost her up to 1gb+. It will cost me damn near $400-$600 to get a new stick on RAM. About $400 for 512, and about $600 for 1gb. Pfft, better off just buying a new laptop with $600 more to play with. :/ What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? |
And what was stopping you from buying a generic stick from any (r)etailer?

Cool thanks. Yeah and I won't be buying any ram from the vendor. Didn't think they'd charge you an obscene amount, then again I was just going to buy from Newegg anyway.
What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? |
Newegg also has RAM identifier using your machine. Memory Configurator Jam it back in, in the dark.

Dell is also a very big whore.
Working at my old high school you couldn't even use a generic floppy drive because the dell ones had like...two pins missing from theirs making it so that the cable would fit their drives. Make sure you check everything before you decide to replace the RAM because Dell could have some fucked up thing to where if you take the RAM out and replace it with something different, your warranty will void out (if it hasn't already) This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
And I didn't know Newegg had a RAM identifier...I haven't bought RAM in a long time from newegg. Always had sticks given to me for free. (Love my IT job.) l0ve technology, ya? :/ I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? |
